Don't Even Think About It, by Sarah Mlynowski

A contemporary teen novel with romance, secrets, scandals, and ESP from the author of Ten Things We Did (And Probably Shouldn't Have) and Bras & Broomsticks!

We weren't always like this. We used to be average New York City high school sophomores. Until our homeroom went for flu shots. We were prepared for some side effects. Maybe a headache. Maybe a sore arm. We definitely didn't expect to get telepathic powers. But suddenly we could hear what everyone was thinking. Our friends. Our parents. Our crushes. Now we all know that Tess is in love with her best friend, Teddy. That Mackenzie cheated on Cooper. That, um, Nurse Carmichael used to be a stripper.

Since we've kept our freakish skill a secret, we can sit next to the class brainiac and ace our tests. We can dump our boyfriends right before they dump us. We know what our friends really think of our jeans, our breath, our new bangs. We always know what's coming. Some of us will thrive. Some of us will crack. None of us will ever be the same.
So stop obsessing about your ex. We're always listening.

Gr 8 Up—Imagine if you had the ability to read other people's minds. What if you could finally know whether your best friend wants to be more than friends, too? What if you could ace every test simply by sitting next to the smartest kid in class? Would you want to know all of your parents' secrets and your teachers' as well? For a group of Bloomberg High School sophomores in Tribeca, every one of these things is possible. After being exposed to a contaminated batch of flu shots, the students of homeroom 10B realize that they can hear the thoughts of everyone else around them. In some ways, their newfound telepathy is a gift. They no longer have to constantly question what people think about them. Studying is a burden of the past. But the downside to hearing everything is that they hear things they never wanted to know. Told in the words of an omniscient narrator who is known only as one of the "espies" (kids with ESP), the story follows several weeks in the life of the 10B sophomores. Readers may struggle to keep up with a large cast of characters, but each sophomore has a helpful distinguishing characteristic. The beginning feels like an info dump. However, the pacing sorts itself out quickly. Mlynowski writes teen protagonists with heart and depth—authentically illustrating the trials and tribulations of the high school experience, rather than making a mockery out of adolescent egocentrism. This is a fun read, recommended for fans of contemporary fiction.—Liz Overberg, Darlington School, Rome, GA

From Booklist
From the author of Ten Things We Did (and Probably Shouldn’t Have) (2011) comes a what-if novel about ordinary tenth-graders who gain extraordinary telepathic powers when their homeroom receives a contaminated batch of the flu vaccine. Instead of leaving students with a sore arm or a headache, the tainted vaccine gives the kids at Manhattan’s Bloomberg High School the ability to read their fellow “Espies” minds. Obviously, this is a blessing and a curse: it’s helpful for anxious Olivia when it comes to executing a perfect first date, but less so for Mackenzie, who has cheated on her longtime boyfriend. The omniscient narrator here is “we”—as in the affected ones—and “we” often interjects with sassy commentary like “Were we surprised by that? Not even a little.” This novel establishes the scenario well, but readers will hope for a sequel with amped-up Espie secrets and scandals. Hand to fans of Cecily von Ziegesar’s all-seeing Gossip Girl and Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian’s Burn for Burn revenge books. Now, flu shot, anyone? HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Mlynowski’s books have been translated into 22 languages and optioned to Hollywood. Her fan base? It’s huge. Grades 7-10. --Ann Kelley

Review
Starred Review, Publishers Weekly, January 6, 2014:
"Mlynowski continues to make comedy look easy in this smart and frequently hilarious novel, which features a collective first-person narrative that fits the premise like a glove... Filled with heartbreak, hilarity, and some brutal truths, Mlynowski’s novel will leave readers thinking about the gaps between our private and public selves and the lies we tell others and ourselves."

RT Book Reviews, March 2014:
"Mlynowski hits all the right notes. There's enough levity to keep readers laughing, but this is far from fluff--the real-life commotions are engaging, and the characters are fully developed. The story is funny, sweet and true to life, as readers have come to expect from Mlynowski. Her teens are emotional without being drama queens, amusing but not twee. A perfect read."

Booklist, January 1, 2014:
"Readers will hope for a sequel with amped-up Espie secrets and scandals. Hand to fans of Cecily von Ziegesar’s all-seeing Gossip Girl and Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian’s Burn for Burn revenge books. Now, flu shot, anyone?"

Kirkus Reviews, February 1, 2014:
"The multiple characters are remarkably distinctive, and the plot moves along briskly, combining family drama, complicated romance and friendship turmoil into a compelling view of teen dynamics."

School Library Journal, April 2014:
"Mlynowski writes teen protagonists with heart and depth—authentically illustrating the trials and tribulations of the high school experience, rather than making a mockery out of adolescent egocentrism. This is a fun read, recommended for fans of contemporary fiction."

Loved It!
By Elizabeth Corrigan
A few weeks ago, Net Galley asked me if I wanted to review Don't Even Think About It by Sarah Mlynowski, released March 11, 2014, and I was iffy about it. I had read some stuff by the author before and liked it well enough, but I wasn't sure about this one. A bunch of high school kids become telepathic after getting flu shots? That sounds a little far-fetched, even for me, and I got the feeling it was more real-lifey than paranormal. When I started reading it, I realized it had a lot of "real" and highly flawed characters, which ordinarily I don't like. But I decided to give it a try anyway.

I LOVED IT. I was going to bed late when I needed to get up the next day, and I thought I'd read over a few chapters to get a feel for it. Then I got totally into it and read the whole thing. The characters? They were imperfect, but I liked them. I cared about them. I wanted to know what happened to them. I was concerned for awhile that everything would be too straightforward, and that the plot lines would not intersect enough, but there were a few little twists, and I was happy with how everything turned out.

Granted, this was not a deep read. If you want a scathing realization of the horrors of mind reading or a gritty tale of the seedy underbelly of high school life, this is not it. It's fun, and most of the problems are simplified. I got to thinking about what it would be like if my classmates had been able to read my mind in high school, and that story would have been a lot less light, because I had crippling mood and anxiety disorders. The worst thing these characters had to face was learning that one of the girls had cheated on her adoring boyfriend. But, you know, that's okay. I honestly preferred it that way.

I can't find any information about whether there's going to be a sequel, but I hope there is. I will definitely read it.

WISH IT WERE A SERIES!
By Mary Lou PagePrincess Hoffman
Category /Genre: YA/teen, Fantasy
Received from: Random House Children’s Books via netgalley.com (in exchange for an honest review)
Recommended for: 12+
Grammar/editing: A – near perfect

Twenty-two normal, healthy sophomores go to the nurse's office and receive their annual flu shot. Within 24 hours, their lives have all changed. They can now hear everyone's thoughts. Thank the good Lord there are limitations (distance, barriers, vision) or it would be enough to drive anyone completely mad. First there is the adjustment to this "super power." Then they begin speculating about how long it may last. After all, most side-effects from medications are temporary. Is there a cure? If there is a cure, should they take it or keep their ability?

Imagine if you could hear what everyone around you really thought. All of those times you were nervous during a performance and hoped you did well or wondered if everyone had noticed your new dress, you would know. Of course, you would also know when your best friend hates your favorite pair of skinny jeans or your mom thinks, well, whatever moms think.

Ms. Mlynowski is a veteran YA author, but this is the first of her books that I have read. I loved it. She is, quite obviously, a consummate story-teller. There is no indication that this will be a series, but if it were, I know that I would want to read more about the adventures of this team of classmates. I was particularly intrigued by the unusual POV of this story. I won't say anything more about that and allow you to discover what is so unique about it for yourself. If you decide to read this book, please stop back by and let me know what you thought as well.

Don't Even Think About It - ESP and High School Drama
By Sara
When the sophomores in homeroom 10B get their annual flu shot, they expect the normal side effects, a headache or maybe a sore arm. None of them expect that they'll suddenly develop ESP that enables all 22 of them to hear the thoughts of their classmates, families, and random people on the street. Or that they'll suddenly be able to communicate with each other telepathically. But that's exactly what happens. Suddenly, they know things they've always wondered and things they never wanted to know. Crushes, embarrassing thoughts, and painful secrets are all exposed. But a classroom full of peers with ESP isn't all fun and games. People will get hurt, lines will be crossed, and those on top might well find themselves on the bottom...

I'll be honest - I thought this one was really cheesy at first. The dialogue felt awkward and the characters seemed kind of immature and then, all of a sudden, everything just clicked. I mean, this is what it'd really be like if your homeroom class suddenly had ESP. It would be both really awesome and really, really terrible. Some kids would totally take advantage of the situation, others would do anything to make it go away. This book totally made me question ever answering the question "If you could have any superpower..." with any answer resembling mind-reading abilities.

One of the really unique characteristics of this book is the narration. Instead of being told from one character's point-of-view, it's from the viewpoint of all 22 characters... well, in theory anyway. We don't actually hear from all 22 characters, there are only a handful that are recognizable, but the narrator is pretty much omniscient since any thoughts one of the 22 students has, the remaining 21 have access to. Pretty intense, right? I thought it'd be difficult to keep all the characters straight, but it really wasn't because Mlynowski diversifies the characters that the reader hears from specifically. Each fulfills an identifiable stereotype - player, queen bee, All-American boyfriend, shy girl, etc - making them easy to keep track of. And you might be thinking "Ick, stereotypes" but that's the beauty of DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT. Mlynowski lines all these stereotypes up and then, using an outbreak of ESP, breaks them down and shows the individual within the stereotype.

I also loved that DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT was laugh-out-loud funny without warning. All of a sudden there would just be this really clever one liner that would prompt an almost startled laugh. There was clearly a comedian somewhere in that homeroom.

I was happy to discover that there's a sequel, DON'T THINK TWICE, scheduled for a 2015 release. I can't wait to see what drama the next installment holds!
