How is a book designed? What do book designers think about as they turn manuscripts into printed books? In this unique and appealing volume, book designer Richard Hendel and eight other talented book designers discuss their approaches and working methods. They consider the problems posed by a wide range of projects - selection of a book's size and shape, choice of typeface for text and display, arrangement of type on the page, and determination of typographic details for all parts of the book within manufacturing and budget limitations. Written not only for seasoned and novice book designers, this book will fascinate others in publishing, as well as all readers and authors who are curious to know how books end up looking the way they do.

Thoughtful and thorough, and offering no easy answers, this book forces one to think for herself. On a par with Hochuli's 'Design of Books'.

How designers work
By JL--
As author Richard Hendel notes, designing a book is a complicated process, "especially because there isn't a single way to proceed." Hendel is associate director and design and production manager at University of North Carolina Press, ideally qualified to give a true picture of the life of a book designer.

On Book Design is divided into three sections. In "Looking Like Books" Hendel discusses what makes a book, a book. More than just the author's words, a book is defined by its typography, the size of the fonts, the width of the margins, where the subheads fall on a page. While this may seem obvious, what is harder to determine is the right combination of all these subjective elements. If a reader is paying more attention to the arrangement of the words rather than to the content itself, the design may be overdone.

The book's second section, "The Design Begins Here" describes exactly what it is that designers do-from the big picture stuff (e.g., matching the author's content and tone) to the smallest details (e.g., determining whether to choose old-style or line numbers).

Scattered throughout the book are samples of projects designed by Hendel and others. This is extremely helpful and often fascinating, though on occasion the level of detail Hendel provides borders on the tedious.

In the third section, "How Designers Work," Hendel hands the page over to several respected designers. Some work entirely on the computer; others, like Hendel, use pencil and paper to create their first design drafts. As Hendel notes, "What is important is not the mechanics of making the layouts but finding exactly the right design and typeface for the author's words."

Book Designers on Book Design
By Simulacrum
When Henry David Thoreau made a complete list of each and every possession he had at Walden Pond, he curiously omitted one thing: He forgot the pencil that enabled him to make the list. Successful book design, says Richard Hendel, often goes as unnoticed and unappreciated as Thoreau's pencil. It is, as Beatrice Warde once said, a transparent goblet, so that (writes Hendel) "the very invisibility of its design is to its credit." Hendel should know, having worked for many years as a highly regarded book designer, most recently with the University of North Carolina Press. Thankfully, this is not a prosaic instructional manual--"it is a book about how books are designed," he cautions, "not a book about how to design books"--but a medley of honest reflections about how book designers see, think, and feel. Written by the author and eight other American and British designers, it is illustrated by 110 black and white examples, among them several pieces by Iowa-born designer Merle Armitage and the University of Nebraska's Richard Eckersley, two of the century's most inventive (yet unheralded) book designers. With surprising candor, the text asks: How do book designers get their ideas? What do they worry about? How did they approach a particular book? And what difference does it all make? After all, confides Hendel, prize-winning book designs are largely unappreciated, cost more to produce, and are rarely available in bookstores. "There isn't any correlation between what books look like and how they sell," he laments. "Design seems to make no difference." Of particular interest is a section about the design of this book, which led us to wonder how well it will sell, whether bookstores will carry it, and (hopefully, because it has much to offer) the extent to which it might inspire other, younger book designers. (Copyright by Roy R. Behrens from Ballast Quarterly Review, Vol. 14, No. 4, Summer 1999.)

A Love Match

An enchanted dagger bearing a mysteriously familiar inscription pointed Fiona Chancellor to Ireland in search of her missing cousin. Then a midnight visit to Celtic holy ground slid her into the seventeenth-century—and into the arms of the most gorgeous male she had ever seen. But after one clash with the stubborn man, Fiona longed only for her twentieth-century comforts.

Instead she found herself pressed against Ian Maclaren, galloping across moonswept moors to escape death. The hot-blooded barbarian ordered her about as if she were a soldier. But his kissesleft no doubt he thought of her as a woman, and soon she knew she would trade a thousand bubble baths for one of his sensual massages and give up chocolate to melt in one of his passionate embraces. For although she had traveled across three centuries into the past, it had taken only a moment for her heart to recognize she had met her match.

wonderful sequel
By Brenda Condit
This is the sequel to the book" A Double-Edged Blade" which was the story of Miles and Faith. Well they appear in this book too so you get to find out what happened to them. This is Fiona's story. She is Faith's cousin back in modern England aand after a year of not knowing where Faith has gone to she decides to do a bit of investigating on her oen. She goes to Ireland where her cousin disapeared and finds herself at the same Druid circle of stones that Faith was at. The time portal opens again and she finds her self propelled back in time to the Ireland of 1649. There she meets up with Miles's friend a Scot with an attitude, named Ian. Together they must help Miles and Faith and along the way they fall for each other. Some of the supporting characters from the first book make an appearance here and it makes for a very enjoyable read. I also enjoyed the different ending it had. I would recommend this book and the first one to anyone who enjoys time travel books.

Average time-travel romance
By Gemma
From the back cover:

A love match...

An enchanted dagger bearing a mysteriously familiar inscription pointed Fiona Chancellor to Ireland in search of her missing cousin. Then a midnight visit to Celtic holy ground slid her into the seventeenth-century--and into the arms of the most gorgeous male she had ever seen. But after one clash with the stubborn man, Fiona longed only for her twentieth-century comforts.

Instead, she found herself pressed against Ian Maclaren, galloping across moonswept moors to escape death. The hot-blooded barbarian ordered her about as if she were a soldier. But his kisses left no doubt he thought of her as a woman, and soon she knew she would trade a thousand bubble baths for one of his passionate embraces. For although she had traveled across three centuries into the past, it had taken only a moment for her heart to recognize she had met her match.

And my review:

I absolutely love time-travel romances, so I've read a lot of them. I found this to be an average read. While this book was a sequel to "A Double-Edged Blade", this book worked just fine as a stand-alone. Still, those who enjoyed the first book will like that much of this story revolves around the main characters of that story.

The time-travel aspect of this story was interesting, and quite well-written. At first, it seemed as if Fiona accepted the fact that she'd travelled 300 years into the past a bit too easily, but the author would throw in enough "fish out of water" moments to keep it realistic. The characters were also quite well drawn, and the action was non-stop. This book was also quite well researched, and interesting, as not many books are set in Ireland during the time of Oliver Cromwell.

My only complaint with this book was that the romance part of it felt a little bit rushed. At first, it seemed to be progressing nicely, but then the author kind of ruined it by having the characters fall into bed so quickly. (They'd only known each other for a few days). I know that Fiona is a modern woman, and therefore not subject to the rigid standards of the day, but still, I kind of felt cheated. It was like the romance was just starting to blossom, and then the author decided to take a short-cut and throw them into bed together, where, of course, they realize that this must be love.

Also, the ended felt a little bit rushed, as if the author had gotten past the exciting part of the story and just wanted to wrap things up.

Still, I've read far worse time-travel novels than this one. While I wouldn't give this a glowing recommendation, this was still an enjoyable quick read, and I would probably give other books by this author a try.

Great time travel tale
By A Customer
In 1997, the trail Fiona Chanceller has followed in search of her missing cousin Faith Worthington takes her to County Tyrone in Northern Ireland. The experts told her that the dagger she holds that Faith once possessed comes from that region. She quickly learns from an antique shop owner, Seamus Gogarty that the OBruiader dagger is indeed from the area. He also informs her that the dagger, which has not been seen in centuries at least in this vicinity, has a legend involving Fey people, and an enchantment allegedly activated by mystic stone circles like that of nearby Beaghmore.
Fionas search takes a twist when she soon finds herself in mid-seventeenth century Ireland where she learns that Faith is happy with her soul mate, who is a prisoner of the Roundheads. As Fiona tries to help free Miles OBruiader, she falls in love with his best friend Ian Maclaren, but can she give up the conveniences of late twentieth century life as her friend has?
ACROSS A MOONSWEPT MOOR is an exciting time travel romance. The engaging story line works because the heroine struggles with her adjustment to a less technological area and clearly misses the conveniences she is used to having. The return of Faith and Miles (stars of A DOUBLE EDGED BLADE) augments this story as their fate impacts on that of Fiona and Ian. This cleverly crafted tale that uses historical tidbits to describe the setting belongs to the lead couple, especially the cake and eat it heroine who wants her hunk and her twentieth century devices too.

Fantastic buy for any wrestling fan especially old school ones
By MrsAnnaNicoleBorden
This is an amazing book. Not too big or small it's a perfect size for storing in your collection. I love that it's hardcover. The pages are glossy and it has a really helpful legend of icons to tell you what title belt the superstar has won. I bought it only for Sting. And the wrestlers are in alphabetical order. They give you an actual picture of the superstar plus the illustration. They are really impressive. Sting looks lovely! I highly highly recommend this book. It's truly a must have. I will include a couple pictures below.

Awesome!
By Frank N
Purchased this gem for my nephew and he adores it. The pictures are fantastic and the nuggets of facts are entertaining and informative. I am actually surprised at how many entries were included, as I couldn't think of very many people who were left out. They really went above and beyond to include as many superstars, divas, and other personalities from past and present as possible.

A few quick notes:
1. No, Benoit is not included. You know people are going to ask.

2. It is in alphabetical order.

3. A legend at the beginning nicely explains the icons that appears. For example, the legend shows a distinction between the different titles and accolades (such as winning the Royal Rumble). It is helpful when you land on a superstar such as Edge who has many icons under his name. Awesome idea.

4. Very nice inclusion of NXT.

All in all, I wouldn't be surprised if even older fans enjoyed this book but it will definitely put a smile on a youngster's face.

WWE Ultimate Superstar Guide
By A. Pierre
I saw this book sitting in a pile of new releases and the artwork caught my attention. I thought it would be a kids book but it can be enjoyed by young & old. The first page I flipped to was an NXT star & I thought this is a pretty damn good book. I sat in the store reading it for almost half an hour before purchasing this. I've been a fan of WWE for over twenty years & this is one of the best books I've seen as it is very unique. The roster of stars from past, present, & future are well represented even though I did notice a couple superstars missing. The artwork would fit perfectly in a book about Superstars from the 90's. Highly recommend this book to young & old, well done book & I'd like them to do one over 90's superstars or an updated version.

The grace and power of big cats—lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars, cheetahs, pumas, and snow leopards—are captured in full-color photographs and a text that explores how they hunt, care for their young, and rest in their varied natural habitats. ‘The combination of action shots and the author’s practiced, informal style will win the attention of young readers, with whom Simon charges the future of big cats.’ —C.

From School Library Journal
Grade 2-5-- Simon returns to the animal world with a striking presentation of seven members of the cat family: those that roar--the lion, tiger, leopard and jaguar--and those that merely purr--the puma, cheetah, and snow leopard. An overview discusses characteristics inherent in all, and singles out those unique to individual species. Enough information is presented to satisfy browsers and to develop an understanding of the cats' hunting techniques and adaptations to specific environments whether grasslands, jungles, or snowy mountains. Care has been taken to include those that exist in many parts of the world and to dispel some myths about these mighty hunters. Concluding statements describe how many of the big cats have been hunted nearly to extinction and give suggestions on ways they can be protected. The format is large, spacious, and uncluttered, and the text flows with an energy that matches the strength of these animals. Full-page, full-color photographs are well chosen for their clarity and diversity as cats stare boldly, hunt for prey, or appear in gentle poses with their cubs. A book that commands attention andis as impressive as the magnificent beasts it features. --Diane Nunn, Richard E. Byrd Elementary Sch . , Glen Rock, NJ

"Blue whales, right whales, humpback whales, killer whales, and more-- all strikingly photographed and lovingly described. Captivating."--" The Kirkus Reviews "Whales in their natural habitat are lavishly illustrated in this introduction to their physical characteristics and biology. The full-color photographs are lush, the text is succint, and the oversized format sets off the large scale of these magnificent creatures. A flowing text perfectly accented by the photographs. A beautiful and factual addition for all collections." --" School Library Journal

Beautiful Photos and Great Facts about Big Cats
By Joelle
Seymour Simon's book "Big Cats" is wonderful introduction for children to the world of the big cats. Children will love the huge, full-colour photographs of these gorgeous felines as they learn about lions, leopards, tigers and more. Written in terms that the young can quickly comprehend, this book presents interesting insights into these cats of the wild and makes learning about these animals a delight.

Yes, Virginia, they can purrrrrrrr
By Judy K. Polhemus
You would be mistaken if you think big cats cannot purr. They can. But not all big cats can roar. In fact, three cannot roar: puma, cheetah, and snow leopard. The seven "big cats" are tiger, leopard, lion, jaguar, puma, cheetah, and snow leopard--and they all purrrrrrr.

Seymour Simon provides interesting facts like this in his two or more-page spread about each Big Cat. Let's go back to those roars for a moment. When a lion roars, creatures (including people) can hear that roar up to five miles away. No wonder we show extreme respect to that magnificent animal.

I once read a customer review on Amazon concerning another of Simon's animal books. The person stated that captions for each picture would be nice for her and her child. What I discovered in "Big Cats" is that each animal is the focus of two or more pages: one is a photograph, the other is a page of information. Why is a caption necessary if an entire page is about the photo? I think she wanted something quick per photo. If so, Simon's Level I readers still do not have captions, but they do have just a couple of sentences per page--in essence a caption.

What I find with Simon is that once you have read one of his books in a particular series, you become attached to his writing. Simon is an excellent science writer of every kind of science and writes mostly for elementary children. "Big Cats" is written on a fourth or fifth grade level. The back of this book says he is author of over 100 science books for young readers. Actually, that was 1991. In 2007 he has over 200 books to his credit.

Here are some things you will learn in "Big Cats": the leopard likes to drag his kill up a tree for safe storage from other predatory animals. There is a photo to prove it. A cheetah works alone, uses his burst of speed up to 70mph, eats as much as he can right then, and leaves the kill because he is too exhausted to guard it. A cheetah is the only big cat without large canine teeth and often loses cubs to predators because she has difficulty defending them.

One of the many things I appreciate about this book is Simon's fierce dedication to animal and habitat preservation. His last page is devoted to this topic through its young readers. Raise up a child the way it should go....

Whether it is purring, killing, raising young cubs, losing its natural habitat, Big Cats have much in common. According to Simon, it is up to us to make sure they continue to have an existence.

Another great Seymour Simon early childhood science picture book
By Assoc For Natural Psych
Seymour Simon has consistently interesting early childhood nature/science books for childern. This is another example of a topic sure to intrigue the most die-hard video game addicted first grader. This will hold the interest of most boys. Very good information and pictures on he big cats, African lions, cheetahs, tigers, etc. Good educational tool to help children to put all the pieces together of animals they already have some knowledge about. Teachers and parents can use the pictures as a springboard for children's artwork. Nice book, like all of Seymour Simon books that I've seen.

Down to Earth: Nature's Role in American History, by Ted Steinberg

In this ambitious and provocative text, environmental historian Ted Steinberg offers a sweeping history of the United States--a history that, for the first time, places the environment at the very center of the narrative. Now in a new edition, Down to Earth reenvisions the story of America "from the ground up." It reveals how focusing on plants, animals, climate, and other ecological factors can radically change the way that we think about the past. Examining such familiar topics as colonization, the industrial revolution, slavery, the Civil War, and the emergence of consumer culture, Steinberg recounts how the natural world influenced the course of human history. From the colonists' attempts to impose order on the land to modern efforts to sell the wilderness as a consumer good, he reminds readers that many critical episodes in U.S. history were, in fact, environmental events. The text highlights the ways in which Americans have attempted to reshape and control nature, from Thomas Jefferson's surveying plan, which divided the national landscape into a grid, to the transformation of animals, crops, and even water into commodities.

In the second edition, Steinberg has thoroughly revised and updated the section on the twentieth century. He also introduces a timely new theme--the rise of the corporation. By addressing the ways in which nature functions in the world of big business, as well as the efforts by environmentalists to combat corporate power, Steinberg provides a richer understanding of consumerism.

Down to Earth is ideal for courses in environmental history, environmental studies, urban studies, economic history, and American history. Passionately argued and thought provoking, this powerful text retells our nation's history with nature in the foreground--a perspective that will challenge our view of everything from Jamestown to McDonald's.

Amazon.com Review
"This book will try to change the way you think about American history," writes Ted Steinberg in the opening line of Down to Earth. That's an ambitious claim, but not far off the mark. His fascinating book is essentially an environmental history of the United States, with the author paying particular attention to how elements of nature became commodities and thereby isolated Americans from the natural world. Readers don't have to subscribe to this neo-Marxist concept in order to appreciate Steinberg's observations about everything from the old-time urban problem of horse excrement ("the nineteenth-century equivalent of auto pollution") to the massive amounts of garbage produced by fast-food chains (McDonald's, he says, requires "an area equivalent in size to more than 450,000 football fields" to supply its paper needs). He also tells what may be the first-ever natural history of the Civil War. This may sound idiosyncratic, and to some extent it is, yet Steinberg weaves it all together and makes the underappreciated point that "it is quite simply wrong to view the natural world as an unchanging backdrop to the past." It changes all the time, he writes, and it has shaped Americans in ways that few of them understand. --John Miller

From Publishers Weekly
Steinberg, an environmental historian at Case Western Reserve University, examines the dynamic interactions between America's economic, political and cultural institutions and its geography, plants, animals and natural resources. He presents two predominant themes. The first is that the ecological balance is precarious and can be undermined, even completely destroyed, by unintended changes that flow from the smallest of events. The second is that the capitalist impulse to treat everything within its horizon as a commodity, and the corollary compulsion to assign a dollar value to every commodity, is fundamentally at odds with the existence of the diverse and healthy ecosystems that existed prior to the country's settlement. Steinberg makes a strong case, choosing examples that range from the environmental changes that followed the mysterious extinction of the carrier pigeon to the ecological effects of the mundane garbage disposals, lawns, highways, pesticides and even the salt spread on roads to melt snow to demonstrate his points. He is a historian with strong opinions, and in later chapters political commentary is increasingly prominent. Much of his commentary will offend conservative readers, who will disagree with Steinberg's harsh attacks on American business. For example, he chides the meatpacking industry for "corporate slaughterhouses [that] dehumanized workers" and the biotechnology industry because "feeding the malnourished has never been the driving force behind [it]. Profits, more than people, motivated this bold new science." Interestingly, he is also critical of mainstream environmental groups, who he believes have been coopted by contributions from corporations. Steinberg (Acts of God: The Unnatural History of Natural Disaster in America) is provocative, backing up his opinions with facts and well-honed arguments, and it will be hard to ignore his major theses. The writing is professional although occasionally stilted. 65 b&w photos, 5 maps not seen by PW.

From Booklist
The story of humankind is the tale of our efforts to control nature in order to feed, shelter, clothe, transport, defend, enrich, and entertain ourselves, activities that have enormous ecological consequences. Fluent in matters ecologic, economic, and social, environmental historian Steinberg views American history as a complicated give-and-take between nature and humankind. He begins with a snapshot of Indian agriculture and hunting practices, then charts the myriad ways the Anglo-American settlers' zeal for private property, trade, technology, and systemization caused rapid and radical environmental change. Moving briskly forward in time to almost cinematic effect, Steinberg chronicles the ecological effects of the clear-cutting of forests, the great push west, the building of dams and railroads, and the rise of the cattle and car industries, heady endeavors that have diminished biodiversity and created vast quantities of hazardous waste and garbage. A socially conscious sibling to Tim Flannery's Eternal Frontier [BKL My 1 01], Steinberg's scintillating environmental panorama reveals the ripple effect of every choice we make, from creating nuclear weapons to eating fast food, driving SUVs, and maintaining perfect lawns. a real environmental history
By A Customer
Since environmental history staked its claim to status as an independent subfield of history, environmental historians have clamored for the acknowledgment of the rest of the profession. While many environmental historians have won awards and been honored by the profession at large, injecting the substance of the discipline into mainstream historical scholarship and teaching has been a harder task. The field has come a long way since Donald Worster was asked by his graduate school mates how he would present history from the bear's point of view, but it has long been too easy to consign environmental history to the ghetto of disciplinary subfields. American historians have embraced the idea that the U.S. was and saw itself as "nature's nation," but explored that idea no farther. For the longest time, no one truly attempted to understand what that particular relationship meant in the nation's history.
Some of the blame for this circumstance falls on the discipline. For the better part of a generation, synthesis was beyond the reach of environmental history. The field produced brilliant monographs, but little that appealed beyond the boundaries of a growing field to main vein of American history, wrapped up as it was and is in the topics of race, class, and gender. Only in recent years have a series of syntheses been published, paving the way for the next step, the integration of environmental history into mainstream history.
Ted Steinberg Down to Earth: Nature's Role in American History is a bold attempt to jump that gap. One of the first people to be trained in environmental history by an established environmental historian, Steinberg produced three major works before undertaking this volume. Here he makes the case for treating the American environment as an actor on the stage of national history. He argues that the commodification of nature became the catalytic factor in the transformation of the physical nature of the North American continent. "The benefits of modern, from fast food to flush toilets, for all their virtues," he writes, "have come at the price of ecological amnesia" (xii).
Steinberg retells American history through this lens with varying degrees of success. The book is bold and in places wise; simultaneously and despite Steinberg's attempt to create distance from declensionism, he is closely tied to the idea in Marxian terms. His characteristic incisive insights are tempered by the need to cover vast swaths of the past in narrative style, creating something that is simultaneously a textbook and a far more sophisticated argument about the role of nature in history. The complexity of the topic and the need for broad coverage imperil the reader, for the larger argument, that the nature of American nature mattered in the history of the continent, gets lost in the telling and retelling of American history. While the reader is offered Thomas Midgely, the chemist who put lead back into gasoline to eliminate engine knock early in the twentieth century, and Norman Borlaug, the progenitor of the Green Revolution, it feels like the kinds of stunts textbook writers use to invigorate the past for students, not the dawning of a new appreciation for the role of the physical environment in the human past. Despite the brilliance of the work and the marvelous grasp Steinberg displays, he can't quite bring the role of environment as a driving force to the fore.
Down to Earth is marvelous step toward the synthesis that will command the attention of the discipline, but it falls just short of reaching Steinberg's goal of giving environment a place in American history. The best synthesis to yet appear, Down to Earth opens the way for the final integration of environmental history into mainstream American history.

Well written, fresh info, but shaky stats and rhetoric
By Cogito Inter Alia
(3 1/2 stars would be more accurate)

Ted Steinberg is Professor of History and Law at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. His work in the field of environmental history has attracted attention to his name as a leader in the new generation of environmental historians. His work Down to Earth: Nature's Role in American History is his assessment of the natural and human forces that have shaped the United States. This book was nominated for the 2003 Pulitzer Prize in History.

Part one (chapters 1-3) entitled Chaos to Simplicity chronicles early forces of nature from the breakup of Pangea to the first native settlers of North America and the settlement of the first Europeans. In it, Steinberg discusses overkill and the depletion of the large mammals of North America. He covers themes of disease, animal domestication (and introduction, as with the horse), and early Malthusian forces in New England. This may seem redundant to readers of environmental history, but Steinberg packaged Down to Earth as a textbook so that a general understanding of American environmental history can be understood. In later chapters, Steinberg gives innovative analysis to topics such as how the rise of commodities affected New England, the climate of the South promoted slavery and poor land use, and how agricultural discoveries (particularly that of California) drastically changed life on the Eastern coast.

Steinberg hits his stride in Part III (Consuming Nature) as he described how the evolution of these natural and environmental changes converged to give way to an unprecedented environmental monster we have today. Steinberg points to cultural forces embodied in consumerism and modern conveniences as the culprit that puts distance between the individual and the environmental impact they produce. Of particular interest is his account of America's switch from pork to beef as the predominant meat of choice in chapter 12. His analysis of the origins of the modern environmental movement (chapter 15) and the issues of corporate conspiracy the automobile, and lack of mass transit options (chapter 13) are also rather informative.

The themes of the book steady the line between pure history and editorial commentary. Many of Steinberg's persuasions, as evidenced through his constant reference to laborers and "non-union" areas, make his book read like a political science text. It is true that bias is unavoidable in any work, but the professional historian must make pains to realize the holistic sway of his document. To his credit, Steinberg often makes rebuttals in the opposing side of the argument when his analysis gets personal, as in the case of Ronald Reagan (p. 258) and other politicians.

Dr. Steinberg's writing approach invites the reader to enjoy his book on the literary level as well as the historical. At times, especially in the latter chapters, he asserts an irritating habit of quoting out-of-date statistics where more current ones are surely readily available. More research into his bibliography could tell whether this weakness shows itself as lackadaisical research on one hand, or the choosing of the more compelling statistics to make his case on the other.

Important Topic; Trivial Treatment
By Donald Fry
In Down to Earth, environmental historian Ted Steinberg struggles to establish nature as a profound force in the general narrative of American history. The book is rife with interesting facts and fascinating events, but unfortunately it does not consistently build upon the notion that the American past has been shaped by man's interaction with the environment. Steinberg offers some anecdotal evidence early in the text, but he seems to lose track of the book's purpose after the first few chapters. The last half of Down to Earth, in particular, leaves the reader wondering if there existed any sort of positive man/nature interaction after World War Two. Still, several far more troubling problems emerge from the book.

Too often Steinberg's assumptions pass for evidence, and the author frequently reveals his own ideological biases. Down to Earth also neglects many major themes in environmental history, and seminal works by George Perkins Marsh, Frederick Jackson Turner, and Leo Marx do not even show up in the bibliography.

Down to Earth offers a good deal of trivia, and some breezy reading, but in order to really understand environmental history, erudite individuals should turn to works by William Cronon, Richard White, Donald Worster, and Martin Melosi.
