In a carefully written story, poet Mayes (Ex Voto, Lost Roads, 1995), who chairs the creative writing department at San Francisco State University, recounts the purchase and renovation of an abandoned Tuscan villa. She begins with the 1990 search with her companion, Ed, for a summer home to take the place of the rented farmhouses of past years. They finally decide on Bramasole ("Yearning for the Sun"), a villa with 17 rooms and a garden that has been standing empty for 30 years. There is the ordeal of getting money transferred via the tangled Italian banking system, as well as bringing together the owner, builders, and government officials to get the necessary work done. The daunting process requires several years. Meanwhile, Mayes finds Italian country life a healthy antidote to hectic San Francisco, enjoying, for example, the fruits of her own garden, friends in the village, and the first olive harvest. Richly written - a great escape

As someone who is used to taking frequent Mediterranean vacations but was marooned stateside this past summer, I thanked my lucky stars for happening upon this book. It was just the escape I needed. As I got deeper into it, I felt myself becoming more and more enamored with Tuscany, Bramasole and its cast of characters. Mayes hits her stride with rich, textured detail of her environment after the first 50 pages or so. Before that, she gets a little too bogged down in renovation process. I really felt that I was there, right down to hearing the crickets singing in the hot summer sun. Unlike so many others who reviewed this book, I was not offended at all by her descriptions of the Tuscan locals or the lifestyle. She was very complimentary and respectful of everyone she wrote about. One thing that could have been left out - the references to Mayes childhood that screamed "I'm wealthy!" The recipe chapters were an added bonus and inspired me to get cooking. Try the mushroom lasagna with bechamel sauce in the later food chapter - it's divine. The bottom line - if you're looking for a wry, humorous account of life as an expatriate, a la Peter Mayle, this book won't do it for you. But if you want to immerse yourself in a richly written tribute to the rolling hills of a gorgeous, faraway land, Tuscan Sun is not to be missed.

The literary equivalent to a bag of potato chips

You enjoy it while it lasts, get a little heartburn about half way through, and you feel a little funny after you're done. And you know that it's all just empty calories...
I was debating whether or not I should do a cycling tour of Tuscany when I spotted this book. I took it as a sign from above, so I immediately purchased it in hopes of being inspired to do the tour. Well... I WAS inspired, but not as much as I would've hoped.
Much like others have said, the first third of this book is quite sweet and captivating. It does a great job of drawing a sparse, beautifully concise mental picture of the Tuscan countryside. I really enjoyed her literary 'frugality'.
However, the only frugality she exhibits appears to be in her prose... As the book drags on, it becomes more and more the transcribed diary of a spoiled little rich girl who has trouble keeping the reins on her pocketbook. I found the references to shoe-shopping addictions to be particularly shallow.
And after the umpteenth complaint about cost overruns on the house renovations - followed by inexplicable spending sprees - I began to hear the phrase, "Awwww, the poor wittle baby" going through my head more and more. If everything's so darn expensive, why do you keep buying, and buying, and buying?
But I must admit that there is the odd sprinkle of profundity throughout the text. Every twenty pages or so, there was something - perhaps only one sentence - that would strike a chord within me, and would make me put the book down, look out the window, and remark to myself, "So, so true." In particular, her description of travel and its effect on the traveller was especially meaningful to me. It put into words what I've felt in the past, many times, but was unable to explain.
Overall, this book is charming, frustrating, occasionally profound, but mostly vacant.
A perfect book to read while sitting in a hammock - or the tub - when you have absolutely no desire to stretch your intellectual capacity.

More about consumerism goes abroad than about Italy

It seems sad and strange that this book should be a best seller. The author writes mainly about her material acquisitions--the villa, the linens, the pottery, the furniture. Her contacts with Italians are of the depth of my contacts with my plumber, real estate agent, or checkout clerk. She makes up for this by "imagining" the lives of people she sees--a condescending exercise that violates the integrity of these people's lives. Even the main characters, the author, her husband, her daughter, are described as roles--poet, gourmet cook, department chair, mill owner's daughter--rather than as people with emotions, quirks, sorrows and joys. "Insights" into Italy are from "book larnin'," not from experience.
For an entertaining account of remodeling an Italian villa, "Valley in Italy" by Lisa St. Aubin De Teran is very entertaining. For insights into Italians and life in Italy, "Italian Neighbors" and "An Italian Education" by Tim Parks are great.

Clearly explains theory in a straight forward, and easy to understand way.

Music Theory for Computer Musicians is written very well. I really like the way the song building on cord progressions is explained.
Where other theory books muddy the explanation this book makes it clear and simple. The use of diagrams, and the piano roll is very helpful. This book excels where other kindle formatted books have been lacking. That is in the display and layout of the explanatory figures that usually don't translate to the kindle editions well. I think this is a god theory book for any musician. I apply it to guitar, keyboard, and ukulele.

Good concept, poor execution

The author is well qualified and doubtless incredibly talented as well, but I think this book falls short of its potential. As a complete novice in the world of music theory, I really felt that the early chapters were great, but that the later ones didn't include enough depth for me to understand what he was getting at. I know practice is important, but it is difficult to practice when you can't even understand what the author is getting at.

Absolutely AMAZING BOOK!!!

This book is absolutely AMAZING!!!! If you are self thought and played synths and keyboards all your life and you want finally get into the music theory then this book is definitely for you. It is very clear and constantly matches computer examples to pure music samples. very very well written and the exercises are not that easy like you normally find in these teaching books... they get tougher and tougher as you move up on chapters. there is a new version coming out this year and even if there very few changes in it compared with this older version I will definitely get me a copy.!!!

Helpful when tutoring Adult Basic Education Students in Math

This text is one of several mathematics texts available at Milwaukee Achiever Literacy Services, where I am a volunteer tutor. Achieving TABE Success in Mathematics is the text that my students and I use regularly. Our reasons are: 1. A single concept is presented on most pages. At the top of the page there is a short explanation that is usually clear enough for the students to start doing exercises on their own. Then they ask questions about specific exercises, and I listen to their thinking and answer their questions. ( We often cannot do this when we use other texts. Students end up spending more time listening and less time doing exercises.) 2. Inexpensive secondhand copies of the Achieving TABE Success books are available through various websites, including the Amazon website. These can be purchased so that students can use them at home. 3. Many students are required to take the TABE test. The Achieving TABE Success in Mathematics Series is specifically designed to prepare students to pass the TABE test.

Achieving TABE Success in Mathematics TABE 9 & 10 Level D is one of four Achieving TABE Success in Mathematics texts (Levels E,M,D, A). All of these books are designed to help students succeed on the TABE math test. All contain some of the same content and explanations. More difficult topics such as dividing decimals,solving algebraic equations,negative numbers are included in the higher level books (A is the highest level book.D is the second highest.) The level D book is the one that I have used the most.

Another volunteer tutor commented on the original version of this review and recommended the Number Power books. I also recommend both series of Number Power books. One series (Number Power level E Introductory, Number Power level M Intermediate 1, Number Power level D Intermediate level 2, and Number Power level A Advanced) is very similar to the Achieving TABE Success in Mathematics series. (Many of the exercises are the same.) I think that I could use this series the same way that I now use the Achieving TABE Success series. The other Number Power series has nine volumes on different topics (Volume 1 is entitled Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying and Dividing, Volume 2 is entitled Fractions, Decimals, and Per Cents,etc.) I find supplemental exercises in this second, longer series.

I am currently using the Achieving TABE Success in Mathematics level M and level D books to help a student improve his score on the Accuplacer Arithmetic Exam. I have used the Achieving TABE Success series in Math to help prepare a student for the old GED exam. Now students at Milwaukee Achiever do not prepare to take the new GED exam. Instead they must take exams to show that they are prepared for a Wisconsin HSED class at Milwaukee Achiever. ( At this point, I think that I could use the Achieving TABE Success in Mathematics books to help students prepare for their Wisconsin HSED class. I think that tutors would have to use texts such as the SCORE BOOST series, the Kaplan GED 2015 Strategies, Practice, and Review Book, or the Common Core Mathematics, Basics to help students prepare for the new GED exam.)

Consider These Alternatives

At this time it is difficult to get reasonably-priced copies of this text. One alternative is Number Power Introductory Level E, which is also TABE-correlated and has the same helpful format. But the Number Power Introductory Level E text and this text share a drawback: They do not cover topics which the TABE and Acuplacer Arithmetic Exams cover: percents, most of fractions, multiplication and division of decimals. The best alternatives to this text are the intermediate, levels M and D texts from both the Achieving TABE Success in Math Series and the Number Power Series.

I passed most of my required sections, but did bad in the math section.
This book is currently helping me, along with my teachers pamphlets...
I hope to pass my tabe test, math section within the next 3 months...
Contemporary has also a geometry book too, which I also ordered... but this book lays a great foundation for basic math..
