That's What Friends are For...

After being married for 12 years – frustrations are starting to rear its ugly head. The communication between Celine & Keith Richardson has come to complete breakdown. While dealing with her marriage crisis, Celine finds out she has breast cancer. Unable to make sense of everything that is happening in her life – Celine leans on her best friend, Lauren for support. Lauren proves that she is willing to do whatever it takes to help her friend overcome the obstacles.

I have to admit my mind went through so many crazy scenarios/theories when I read the title and synopsis. Once I started reading the book – I realized Kimberla Lawson Roby was taking this book in a very different direction than my dramatic brain. (Yep! There goes my Columbo investigative award)

Once I started reading this book – I couldn’t put it down. The conflict between Celine and her husband, Keith was written from a realistic point-of-view. There are so many times that we become so comfortable in a relationship/marriage that we overlook that major things such as communication. Even though to some readers the title could be a bit misleading because you would expect a story that focused mostly on Lauren and Celine. But the way Kimberla Lawson Roby tells Celine’s story – Lauren always showed up at the right times.

Kimberla Lawson Roby proves why she is the best at what she does. She has delivered an emotional, thought-provoking, and engaging read. Best Friends Forever is an unforgettable story about the power of faith & friendship. Best Friends can’t stop bad things from happening to you, but they can be there to help you get through them.

Best Friends Forever was an interesting read. Meet Celine and Keith. Two hard working, over-achievers, who allowed every day life to come between them. Never fear, God sent Lauren, Celine's best friend are there for her. When times get tough, do not allow pride to take over your life. A true friend will not have to be asked anything, but offer everything they have to you. It was a quick read. I wold love to have had a more detailed story on Keith and why he made the choices he made.

Keith and Celine Richardson have been married for twelve years with a little girl named Kassie. But lately, their home has not been the "happily ever after" that it used to be. With Celine's business, Kassie, and her best friend Lauren, Celine has not made time for her husband. With the constant arguments and Keith coming in at all times of the night and early morning, their marriage is crumbling.

To make matters worse, Celine has found out that she has cancer. So now she has to deal with her failing marriage, take care of her daughter, and her cancer treatments. She is now wondering if she's going to have to weather this storm alone. Soon she realizes that she does have a great support team and it comes in the form of her very best friend Lauren. Celine and Lauren have been inseparable since childhood. She finally decides to tell her best friend about her health and the health of her marriage. Is it too late for her friend to give her the support that she needs?

What can I say about Best Friends Forever by Kimberla Lawson Roby? I have never been disappointed with one of her novels. This is a short read, but it's a good one. It doesn't jump all over the place. It stays on track with how Celine and Keith's marriage started to go down hill. I have always loved how the author incorporates God in her books. It's never too much or too little. It’s always straight to the point and you know that no matter what your circumstances are God is always in control! Trust me, there are some twist and turns throughout the book that you will not expect. Best Friends Forever is a short novel but a good one. I highly recommend this book.

A Poor Choice for Beginners

A difficult to read text. I have used it as a text for a statistics course I taught (it was not my choice). There are few illustrations, the text is not clearly written, and despite this being the 6th edition, there are still numerous errors in the solutions given for the problems at the end of each chapter. Further, no use of current statistical software is mentioned. Many students have been frustrated by this text -- there are better options out there.

Invaluable Book on Branding Using Archetypes

This book offers invaluable insights about using archetypes for understanding and deriving brands. The author argues that branding practices have not changed for 40 years despite massive change in so many other parts of the business world. He discusses the reasons for this and provides convincing reasons that we should - at the very least - question this lack of change.

A key argument is that neuroscience now provides evidence that many of the go to methods of establishing a brand identity are based on false premises. Here, the reader is invited to consider archetypes and a believable case is presented for using of an archetypal approach for branding or rebranding.

I found the concept that brands consist of primary and secondary archetypes to be illuminating. As was the emphasis on the need to bring brands alive at touch points. The author states his well-structured case in an easy to read style with a minimum of jargon. He grounds his ideas by showing how they would apply to institutions in the business world such as banking.

It was obvious to me, within a few pages of the book that an organization I worked for - who had gone through a rational branding exercise - had ended up with its secondary archetype, the Warrior, instead of its primary archetype, the Lover. This book would have saved countless hours and a tidy sum of money to get a more useful result.

I was eager to get the second volume to get more in-depth insights into the 20 odd key archetypes. I highly recommend it for small business owners and those of an entrepreneurial spirit who want something on branding that can be applied in a straight forward and practical way. I am certainly using it for the branding of a new enterprise I'm involved in.

Finally a way to understand brand archetypes.

I found this book to be an easy read with clear information on brand archetypes and their use in the market. Recently working on my own branding I learned I am an Explorer, Thought Leader and Outlaw. Using Creating Brand Meaning I was able to better understand how to use this archetype in my own business and how joyful it is to have a business that reflects your authentic self. Through clear descriptions of known brands like Nike and others I could easily understand how the brands were played out in products, marketing and advertising, this is helping me to guide my own marketing and product roll out plan for this year. A great book to read to have a joyful business and gain a leading edge.

The increased unification the Goldwater-Nichols Act was intended to bring to the Department of Defense was considered too extreme by some, but insufficient by others. In this monograph, Professor Douglas Lovelace assesses many of the act's major provisions. He describes the congressional motivation for passing the act, assesses the extent to which the act has been implemented, discusses its impact on the Department of Defense, and offers recommendations for furthering the purposes underlying the act. The author's critical analysis leads him to conclude that the Department of Defense and the nation have benefitted from the substantial implementation of the Goldwater-Nichols Act. As we approach its 10-year anniversary, however, Professor Lovelace finds significant room both for the Department of Defense to complete implementation and for the Congress to enact modifications to more coherently focus the act on its central purposes. His thought-provoking analyses, conclusions, and recommendations should fuel discussions of the extent to which the act has, or can, achieve its intended results.
