I'm a huge fan of the "Lord of the Rings" ...

I'm a huge fan of the "Lord of the Rings" series and have been in search for books that actually could keep my attention as well as them. "Surviving Eden" is just that. At the end of this first book, I was left wanting more. I actually cried out, "No," when it ended. I could not get enough of it.

Scott Marcy whisks you away beside Alex Dubois to a mysterious world filled with creatures that could help you, hunt you, or kill you. Stay alive, stay alive, stay alive! That's all I could think while I read this. I didn't want to leave Alex when the book ended. I've grown quite attached and can't wait to see what lies in store for him next.

I am a great fan of Robin Jones Gunn, but I was very disappointed in the book, because I didn't realize it was a journal for MY writing! There are short quotes on each page, but the rest is blank. Robin Jones Gunn wrote a diary for Christy Miller several years agoFrom the Secret Place in My Heart: The Diary of Christy Miller, so I expected this to be another book like that one. When I opened the book to find mostly lined pages for my writing, I felt a great let down - no new story, no new background information on the characters I love.

If you like journaling, this book may be perfect for you. But if you're looking for a story, wait for the next one Robin Jones Gunn writes!

Fantastic!

Im a christian teacher, this journal has been a wonderful gift for my teen girl students who want to have a real relashionship with God. I also bought one for myself. It is a MUST HAVE for all Chritsy Miller Fans. It's very practical and also colorful. What I liked the most are the quotes printed on the pages, 'cause they make you think a lot.

About the Author
Roza Riaikkenen Roza was born in Lithuania, in 1938. She survived the Holocaust at a very young age, saved by a Lithuanian family, and was later reunited with her family. She received a musical (1956) and scientific (1960) education. She graduated as Doctor of Philosophy in technical science from Moscow State Forestry University in 1970. She then worked as the chief of a scientific laboratory, publishing scientific books and articles, and making some inventions in her field of endeavour at that time. Roza has had a varied career in engineering, musical education, and in the environmental science. Margarita Riaikkenen Margarita is the single daughter of Roza, born in Moscow in 1962. She graduated from Moscow State Forestry University in technical science in 1984, and later completed courses of study in Russia and Australia in parapsychology (1993), spiritual midwifery (1994) and commercial art (2002). As an artist, she has painted many paintings based on inner spiritual realizations and insights. She is the mother of four children. Both mother and daughter participated in the movement for ecological and spiritual renaissance in Russia in the 1980/90s. As long-term spiritual students, they have studied sources of spiritual knowledge from many different traditions, conducted personal consultations, created personal spiritual drawings, and expressed their life experiences and resultant understandings in books, at first in Russian and now in English. In 1995, the family immigrated to Australia, From then on, Roza and Margarita have published several articles on spiritual topics, together with creating artistic works and lecturing to spiritual groups in Melbourne.

Tighter Formatting but Polished Improvements

Having never played X-2 (looking forward to it!), I can only compare the new HD remaster guide to the original Brady Games X guide.

First difference is the new guide is about a quarter inch shorter in height and the same in width as the original as well as 367 pages long *for both games* as opposed to the original's 267 pages for just Final Fantasy X. Okay, so yes, we are already dealing with less over all page real estate. The new guide does use tighter and smaller formatting- if it didn't, thue guide would be a HEFTY 500 pages or more (guesstimate off the 165 pages in HD guide dedicated to X). You really want something that big on your lap? Bad enough when I have fat cats trying to cuddle up while playing....

Smaller, tighter format aside, I noticed that at least in the Final Fantasy X portion, the text has been copied verbatim from the original in places (i.e. the Blitzball section), but not all the repeated information is simply pasted back in. There are some retypes that seem to be aimed at greater clarity - I am not including the new International Version information, just what was already in the original.

Also much of the original art graphics have been ported, albeit smaller. However, the first thing to greet my eyes on opening the HD guide was they made the sphere grid much LARGER than it was in the original. Also, looking at the first temple walkthrough, more detail is added with accompanying screen captions (6 extra steps over the original). So we can see that HD guide may be more "compact", using much of the same text and art previously published, yet positive, polished changes have also been made (along with the entirely new content, of course).

In the sum, this is not an entirely new guide, but an updated, some may insist more polished (I am one), guide to beloved favorites that after a long wait has received glorious new High Definition life.

Just received my Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster from Amazon, and be AWARE that no in-packaging or on-disc game mechanics manual is included. I at first ignored the lack of a manual, but when I encountered the first new mechanic, Standard Sphere Grid or Expert Sphere Grid, I opened up the HD manual, and sure enough there it is was along with all the basic gameplay how-to that I normally ignore.

So if for some reason you want a basic gameplay how-to WITHOUT buying this guide, you will have to look for free online sources. (see final edit)

~EDIT final~ Apparently there is an insert that is missing from my package that has the address to Square Enix basic manual PDF download, so be sure when you get your game copy... check for the insert! :p

Same Great Guide, New In-Depth Sections

Coming from someone who has gamed through FFX roughly 50 times (and X-2 quite a number of times as well), I can honestly say this strategy guide covers everything that the old strategy guides for each game covered! I owned Brady's guides on both and this guide literally combined both guides together in a compact, yet still detailed guide. Interestingly, the print IS smaller, but it still covers everything needed and then some just like before.
My favorite part is that it DOES go into great detail about preparations for the Dark Aeons, still has the Monster Arena's enemy drop/steal chart, details on X-2 coliseum, and an easier to read Alchemist mix chart for X-2 (as well as basic suggestions for mixes in X in Rikku's bio, such the mixture for an Ultra Potion, Mighty G, Chaos Grenade, etc., as well as a link to the full X mix chart for online purposes).
All in all, for a game that is well over a decade old, it still goes into detail more than some of the recent guides published for games (cough, XIII-2 and KHFM in HD guides, cough cough). For people who have never played the game, or the international game such as myself, and need that little extra help, save money on buying the same two guides and just get this one. It literally covers the exact same things as the original X|X-2 guides plus the additions I listed above. I completely recommend this for anyone who needs help (or just likes pictures) :)

Not really worth it

They condensed down a lot to make both guides fit into one book, which is fine but they really rushed it too much and made a lot of mistakes. Maybe it's my OCD but for example the sphere grid maps they give you have so many mistakes!! Paths are missing and spheres are missing or incorrect.

Some times they aren't very clear as to what you should do next, now I didn't get too confused in the FFX portion (probably because I played the old one through 5 times) but I have a few times in FFX-2 and it's extremely frustrating! They skip from place to place really fast without telling you where to go and without the maps, I ended up having to skip back to the FFX portion to get a proper look at the maps to see how to get to the next place.

It's nice having the new book for purposes of finding items because I do believe the chests located throughout the game are in different locations and contain different items than the old versions. But they really don't give you a whole lot of information on new things like the Dark Aeons or the Lutycyr Tower.

Also the monster arena was really messed up, you're much better off using the information from either the old book or getting it on gamefaqs because the items the fiends actually give you is often different than what the book says and even the names of the fiends are messed up. Honestly, is it really that hard to have some proofread everything and make sure it's accurate with the game? Even the publicity campaign in X-2 is missing stuff, the characters are missing from the maps so you have no idea where they are and they cut out chunks of the maps so you get lost easily.

Really one of my least favorite strategy guides I've ever used. I'm very disappointed with Brady Games.

It's a great guide if you're just a casual player and just playing it for a the story line alone, but if you're trying to get everything 100% including trophies even, I highly recommend using the new guide and old guides with it if you have them.

About the Author
DWAYNE D. GREMLER, Bowling Green State University, received his MBA and PhD degrees from Arizona State University. He is a passionate advocate for the research and instruction of services marketing issues. He has served as Chair of the American Marketing Association’s Services Marketing Special Interest Group and has helped organize services marketing conferences in Australia, The Netherlands, France, and the United States. He has been the recipient of several research awards and while a professor at the University of Idaho, Dr. Gremler received the First Interstate Bank Student Excellence in Award for teaching, an award determined by students in the College of Business and Economics.

MARY JO BITNER serves as Academic Director for the Center for Services Leadership at Arizona State University. Dr. Bitner was a founding faculty member of the Center for Services Leadership created for the study of services marketing and management. Dr. Bitner has published more than 50 articles and has received a number of awards for her research in leading journals, including the Journal of Marketing, Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Journal of Business Research, Journal of Retailing, International Journal of Service Industry Management, and Academy of Management Executive. She has consulted with and presented seminars and workshops for numerous businesses. In 2003, Dr. Bitner was honored with the Career Contributions to the Services Discipline award by the American Marketing Association’s Services Special Interest Group.�

Interesting Read

Nuclear airborne sex while saving the world? Yes, please!

Alec Farley defines himself by his abilities. He has been trained to control his skills in such away as to become a powerful weapon for unbeknownst to him a very corrupt father figure. He's also been led to believe many things about life that are outdated and is inexperienced in many common and social aspects of the world. After being recommended to see a psychologist, Alec is initially wary, but soon warms up to the woman trying to treat him when it becomes clear the only threat she poses is in her physical beauty. Having thought he was in control during their sessions, he underestimates her, so Alec tries seduction as his weapon of choice. In doing so, strange things begin to happen and a mission goes awry. His powers become impossibly stronger and harder to manage, but there is something about Beth that sets him off in an entirely new and extremely pleasant way.

For Beth Nakamora, helping Alec realize he has choices in life like everyone else helps him see that the Resource and, most especially his father, is using him. Her own traumatic past, won't allow her to abandon him. The problem is mutual trust and when patient/psychologist lines become blurred and eventually crossed, Beth makes a fateful decision to use force by kidnapping him. She shows Alec a different side to a world he hadn't known existed or experienced outside of books and the Resource. When it becomes apparent to both of them that his father has kept him in the dark for much of his life, Alec decides to take matters into his own hands - literally.

The story has sort of a supernatural X-Men feel to it and by the end, you'll definitely see why. Unfortunately, while the premise was good, some of the execution felt a bit lacking. There were some awkward scene changes or dialogue that didn't seem to flow naturally. Getting into the story and forming connections with the characters took some work as the story and their relationship development is fairly fast-paced.

Alec is and is not a na�ve hero. He is extreme on both sides as displayed by never having been to a Wal-Mart and takes a new interest to Motown music and learns to drive. Throughout the story, he shows an adorable innocence and enthusiasm for learning what would be considered social norms. However, the opposite extreme in his na�vet� is displayed with his visits to strip clubs and his training to take on missions deemed too dangerous for regular civilian soldiers. Somewhat of the same can be said about Beth. While she may be extremely intelligent and retains a do-gooder fearless streak, she plays the victim card a bit too much for my taste. However, her determination is a valued redeeming quality.

Regardless to some of the pitfalls of the story, I was very attracted to the continued stream of action sequences that never let the story flatline. That action includes some really out of this world sex scenes that were enjoyably imagined. The graphic description may not have all been there, but Ms. Lawson definitely provides some unique sense exploratory ones. Some of the secondary characters as well were a welcome addition and occasional distraction.

I believe the series deserves further exploration and will be keeping an eye out for when the next is released. Readers looking for an adventure into a paranormally complex and political world with a quite literally hot hero, will want to check this out.

Action, suspense, and romance...a real page-turner

An inventive thriller with a good balance of action, suspense, and romance. Alec Farley is a young man with special abilities -- he can move things with his mind, or create fires with a wave of his hand. He's been raised from childhood by a shadowy paramilitary organization to become the perfect soldier. Therapist Beth Nakamora is brought in, ostensibly to help Alec with his anger management issues. But she has her own agenda: to help Alec escape, whether he wants to or not. Soon the two of them are on the run, and they have to learn to trust each other as they try to evade Alec's handlers, as well as cope with a terrorist plot against New York City. The relationship between Alec and Beth is nuanced and complicated. The reader has little doubt that they're meant to be together, but the complications (internal and external) that get in the way are plausible and they both remain sympathetic, even when they're at odds. Alec's powers lead to some pretty spectacular action scenes (and "action" scenes, if you know what I mean...). This book is a real page-turner, and I enjoyed it a lot.

A handsome hero. A beautiful (and courageous) woman. A great villain. A mysterious mentor. Throw in some intrigue, explosions and a car chase and you have a great book!
Corrina Lawson, intrepid Geek Mom and blogger, uses her story-telling skills to craft a well-balanced and fun read. (Okay, she doesn't have a car chase, but there IS a car scene.)
Go ahead and get this book; you'll like it.

A professor at Saint Joseph’s University, she has published some dozen books including Economics in Film and Fiction, Medical Tourism in Developing Countries, and Tourists, Migrants and Refugees. Her books were named Choice’s Outstanding Book of the Year, her readings were aired on C-SPAN, and she is the recipient of the Tengelmann Award for Excellence in teaching and research.

Exceptional and thought-provoking

Do They Take Credit Cards in Heaven is a very thought-provoking and compelling book. The uninformed may think economics a dry and boring subject.I say read Milica Z Bookman and you will discover how fascinating, comprehensible and deeply relevant this subject is to our lives - and deaths.

Unique and fascinating
By a reader from coconut grove
This is an excellently researched and written book that is difficult to categorize. It is a superb lesson in economics woven into the "magical thinking" about the after-life. It is surprising that a book covering such a serious scholarly subject can be so accessible. The book manages to draw you into a subject you have probably seldom thought about and you will be enriched for the journey. A memorable read.
