It really is a great book, but ...

I LOVE this book -- at least I love the idea of it. I've been wanting to keep some kind of journal/diary that my kids could read someday and learn about me ... this little book is perfect for that!

It asks a simple question each day for a year. There are 4 lines to answer the question, which is great for someone like me who tends to ramble -- the 4 lines ensure a short and sweet response. In front of the 4 lines is a bolded "20__" where you fill out the current year.

Basically, it's set up like a traditional 5-year diary. Each page has 5 groups of 4 lines beginning with 20__. So after you go through a year of answering the questions at the top of the page, you start over again on the second group of lines.

I think it's a great tool to see how you've grown and changed over the course of a year -- as well as how you've stayed the same. I'm excited to see how my answers will vary from year to year.

I know another reviewer gave a good sampling of the questions, so I'll just throw in a few here: "When was the last time you flew on an airplane?" "What's your favorite word (right now)?" and "Write down a problem you solved today."

Now for the reasons I only gave this book 3 stars, even though I love the idea of it:

1. It's tiny, about 6x4 inches. That makes it handy to carry around, but hard to manage when you're trying to hold the book open and write in a very small space.

2. It doesn't lay flat. That's a big pet peeve of mine, especially for a diary or journal. It makes the chore of writing in a tiny space even more of a chore. My first entry is all messy; it feels impossible to write neatly. I'm hoping to get used to it so my printing can be somewhat legible.

3. I was surprised that there's no ribbon to use as a bookmark. I had to use a sticky note page marker. With the style of this book -- gilded edges, hard cover -- the missing ribbon is confusing, as well as inconvenient.

I think 3.5 stars would be a more accurate rating. This would easily get 5 stars from me if it were a bit bigger, laid flat, and had a ribbon bookmark!

Tiny small stubby stout pocket-sized but beautiful little book

For some reason I thought this book would be much bigger - a normal-sized journal. I had intended to paste a Christmas card from the person who bought it for me on the inside cover. But I had to laugh at that idea when it arrived - it's a stout, stubby little book, would be pocket-sized if it weren't so thick, and this dramatically reduces the amount of space there is on the page to write. I already knew I'd have trouble fitting my thoughts into a few lines given a *regular* size page, but with these miniature pages it's going to be a real challenge to condense my answers to be able to fit!

Still, I love the concept, the questions, the overall look of the book, and the gilded pages. Shiny! Can't wait to get started.

An Easy "Time Capsule" Journal Idea

I love to buy journals but often have trouble writing in them after just a few initial entries. It could be that life gets too busy or that there seems to be nothing in particular to write about that I will want to remember later. This journal has solved my writer's block by providing questions at the top of each page.

Pros
- Each page is dated with the month and day (January 1)
- There are five spaces below for the year "20__" so that you can start on the correct date you get the book. You do not have to wait until January to start your journal, but you can, if that's what you would like
- There are four lines to write your answer so you will have to be concise

Cons
- the binding is tight and the pages are rather small so you have to hold the book open to write in it (so it does not lay flat on it's own)
- there is gold foil which lines the outsides of the pages. It looks fantastic now, but I don't know how much it will hold up over the next 5 years
- the cover feels a little more like cardboard so the photo is a little misleading, but it is hardcover and sturdy

Something I wish I knew when I purchased it were the types of questions it would ask, so below are a sampling of the types of questions in the book. Some are more exciting and some are more boring but at least this gives you an idea.

What is your mission? (January 1)
Did you kiss someone today? (February 14)
Did you sleep alone last night? (March 3)
Who are you fooling? (April 1)
If you could travel anywhere tomorrow, where would you go? (May 25)

I would definitely purchase this as a gift for a friend or anyone who loves to write. I think when the journal is complete it will be really interesting to see how much your answers have (or haven't) changed over five years.

About the Author
Peter Martin worked at Battelle, Pacific Northwest Laboratory (BNW) for over 29 years where he currently holds an Emeritus Laboratory Fellow appointment, and specializes in developing thin film coatings for energy, biomedical, space and defense applications. He pioneered the use of reactive magnetron sputtering technology to fabricate novel and advanced optical coating materials and specializes in large area optical and thin film coating development. He has also led development of high performance large area ground-based and space-based laser mirrors for DOD applications.
Dr. Martin has written over 400 technical publications. He has won three R&D 100 Awards for his work in microfabrication and barrier coatings for flat panel displays, has two FLC awards, was awarded Battelle Technology of the Year (2003) for his work with the photolytic artificial lung, and voted Distinguished Inventor and PNNL 2005 Inventor of the Year. He has 26 US patents and numerous foreign and pending patents. He also teaches short courses on smart materials and energy materials and applications.

The best survey of surface engineering available

Introduction to Surface Engineering and Functionally Engineered Materials (Wiley-Scrivener) is a brilliant book!

Peter Martin takes a very nuanced and complex area and structures the material in an easy to understand and interesting way.

Dr. Martin begins with a brief overview of the various kinds of surfaces, e.g., tribology, optical, electrical, etc. and then goes on to describe the 12 most commonly used techniques for applying the surfacing materials.

He then spends a chapter on each of the surface functional areas with extensive notes on the properties available for each type of surface agent using the applicable surface application techniques.

One of the highlights of the book for me was the incredible bibliography.

I can imagine applications for this in the university classroom or for the practicing engineer (I'm in the latter camp).

If you only buy one book on surface engineering then this is the must buy book for you!

Excellent introductory textbook

While this book provides an excellent overview of surface engineering, it is more of a textbook than a resource for professionals, albeit a very good textbook. Its structured in a manner that makes it ideal for a course and covers a wide variety of topics without getting too in depth into any single area. That said, the book does provide a thorough and informative explanation on its own of the areas covered and does not require supplemental material. The book is highly technical without going completely overboard and compares favorably to many of the undergrad materials science textbooks I remember from school.

For product designers, engineers, scientists

This book is great for a wide audience. In addition to explaining the latest advances in surface material technology, it explains fundamental concepts such as surface friction and corrosion etc. Although some other reviewers said there is a lot of math, I don't think so. The occasional sprinkle of math is not too difficult to follow, it's about the level of a beginner to intermediate college physics course. The chemistry is quite interesting as well. This is a fun book to read even if you're just curious to get up-to-date on the wide variety of surface techniques.

Much is explained about Daoism on meditation, breathing, qigong exercise, food, sex, and philosophy for Daoist living. Another true gem of this book is the philosophical teachings, as much of this material has never been presented in English. The depth of information provided in this book surpasses any previously published work on Daoist health practices and philosophy. It is rare to come across a text with such abundance of insights and written with such clarity as this material provides.

Although�Qigong Teachings of a Taoist Immortal: The Eight Essential Exercises of Master Li Ching-yun was published in 2002, which includes translations from Yang Sen’s book,�the entire translation is now finally available.�This book belongs in everyone’s library who studies or has an interest in Chinese philosophy, qigong regimes, and biographies.

About the Author
Stuart Alve Olson, longtime protege of Master T.T. Liang (1900–2002), is a teacher, translator, and writer on Taoist philosophy, health, and internal arts. In 2006, he formed Valley Spirit Arts to present his books and DVDs, and is the head teacher at the Sanctuary of Tao in Phoenix, Arizona, where he focuses on translating various Taoist texts, conducting lectures, leading retreats, and teaching.

If you practice QiGong, this is a treasure

When confronted with the question about prolonged life through the practice of QiGong, this is a must. Since I am also interested in QiGong history, this book turns out to be a milestone because it gives a direct account of master Li about his practice and theories, so one is able to witness the fusion of the three main chinese traditions in QiGong: taoism, buddhism and confucianism.
Obviously, the great question at first is whether this is a true case, but after reading the book one sees that the main issue is about living a good life, a happy and wholesome life. And if one can add one single day of such a life, it might be worth the while. That being said, personally, I trust the evidence presented. But above all stands the great lesson that master Li gives almost as something trifle: the way is in practicing with dilligence every day of our lives.

Superior translation of Daoist ways for gaining a long healthy happy life.

Great reviews so far. I just wish to add a few more comments to them. First, Stuart Alve Olson has made one of the
most difficult things to do appear easy: translating Chinese concepts into English. Chinese thought--at least its traditional concepts--is relative, holistic; as in everything is connected to all else. The west thinks what exactly is it? Traditional Chinese thought would study how "it" interacts with the universe, and/or nature, and/or human culture. So often certain key words are impossible to totally translate into English. For example, qi (ch'i) [but do see qi-encyclopedia.com for some attempts at that]. Daoism (Taoism) in the west is thought to be a profound academic intellectual philosophy, or a primitive many gods and goddesses folk religion. The Chinese who know must laugh at us for such veiled chauvinism. Of course it is both and neither, because what it is actually is a practical way to gain happiness and health -- "Wellbeing" -- in this topsy-turvy world we exist in. Can that well-being include "immortality"? Li Qingyun shows that one can certainly live and be healthy and happy for many many years. But for two and a half centuries? Much longer longevity exist as dogma in the west. (Try the Book of Genesis, chapters 4,5 and 11).

The majority of the book is "The Secrets of Li Qingyun's Immortality." In effect it is a Daoist "how to do it" manual. It is as profound as any academic thesis on Daoism/Taoism, but it offers not only the philosophy but the practice to gain (or at least further our way on the path to) immortality.

as a person who has read on this topic for over 20 years and studied when available it is almost impossible to find a real teacher or a book that isn't just a regurgitation of someones else's work and has not been fluffed into new age feel good thoughts i found this book outstanding for the meditations and how it is put in laymen's terms so one can actually study it i also ordered the dvd that goes wit h this book and will do a review on that when i watch it. For others trying to go down this path i recommend mantak chia book awakening the healing light of the tao which has the inner smile, 6 healing sounds and many others, another outstanding author is wang li ping, and a book called prenatal energy mobilization qigong and master zhongshan wei book of chinese shamanic cosmic orbit qi gong. i believe the reason it is so hard to find good books on the subject is because most people writeing them do not actually know and understand the content themselves. Stuart olson is one of the people i believe who truly knows what he is writing about. this is the only book i have read of his just so people don't assume i am a student or friend if anyone would like to start a group discussion or discuss taoist studies i am more than happy to my email is wagaige at aol dot com

About the Author
Dr Andrew Lockie received his MC, Ch.B from Aberdeen University, and studied homeopathy at the Royal London Homeopathic hospital . He is currently a homeopathic physician in a private practice in Guildford, Surrey. He is a founder member of the Homeopathic Physician Teaching Group. His publications include THE WOMEN'S GUIDE TO HOMEOPATHY (Hamish Hamilton), THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO HOMEOPATHY and THE NATURAL DIET BOOK (Penguin, 1997).

Exchange Emptiness for Soul Satisfaction

"Satisfaction of the Soul" is a clarion call to hunger and thirst for righteousness. McCullough writes with prophetic clarity, warning the church to guard against the deception of following the emptiness of the world. In the church, as in the world, we find the lust for power, position, greed, and control, resulting in emptiness.

Whether sensing a void in your soul through personal or family crisis, Pastor McCullough entreats the reader to enter into the presence of God. She uses Biblical examples of men and women ablaze with a desire for more of God to illustrate how we can seek God's counsel today in our personal trials and despair.

Jesus promises to replace the yoke of spiritual bondage, hidden anger, rage and the torment of unspoken pain with rest for the soul. This book is for anyone who wants to fill that void by being released into a deeper relationship with God to experience the soul satisfaction that comes with a mind focused on him.

This book is profound. Also it lifts your understanding about God and what He wants and expects from you if you are in doubt. Pastor McCullough is an excellent speaker, but now I see her as well as an excellent writer. From now onwards I will purchase her books.

Great book and insightful. No disappointments

As usual, Dr. McCullough is on point and bring out great revelations through the Word and gives parallel situations that we can relate to. One in particular was about lust and ice cream. Basically, you know its there--can't sleep, go to the refrigerator because you don't want the container to get freezer burn and before you know it, the entire container is gone and you are looking for more. The flesh just wants to please its self. It was an eye opener.
