The Forgetting Time: A Novel, by Sharon Guskin

“What if what you did mattered more because life happened again and again, consequences unfolding across decades and continents?…A relentlessly paced page-turner and a profound meditation on the meaning of life.”
—Christina Baker Kline, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Orphan Train

What happens to us after we die? What happens before we are born? At once a riveting mystery and a testament to the profound connection between a child and parent, The Forgetting Time will lead you to reevaluate everything you believe…

What would you do if your four-year-old son claimed he had lived another life and that he wants to go back to it? That he wants his other mother?

Single mom Janie is trying to figure out what is going on with her beloved son Noah. Noah has never been ordinary. He loves to make up stories, and he is constantly surprising her with random trivia someone his age has no right knowing. She always chalked it up to the fact that Noah was precocious—mature beyond his years. But Noah’s eccentricities are starting to become worrisome. One afternoon, Noah’s preschool teacher calls Janie: Noah has been talking about shooting guns and being held under water until he can’t breathe. Suddenly, Janie can’t pretend anymore. The school orders him to get a psychiatric evaluation. And life as she knows it stops for herself and her darling boy.

For Jerome Anderson, life as he knows it has already stopped. Diagnosed with aphasia, his first thought as he approaches the end of his life is, I’m not finished yet. Once an academic star, a graduate of Yale and Harvard, a professor of psychology, he threw everything away to pursue an obsession: the stories of children who remembered past lives. Anderson became the laughing stock of his peers, but he never stopped believing that there was something beyond what anyone could see or comprehend. He spent his life searching for a case that would finally prove it. And with Noah, he thinks he may have found it.

Soon, Noah, Janie, and Anderson will find themselves knocking on the door of a mother whose son has been missing for eight years. When that door opens, all of their questions will be answered.

Gorgeously written and fearlessly provocative, Sharon Guskin’s debut explores the lengths we will go for our children. It examines what we regret in the end of our lives and hope for in the beginning, and everything in between.

Reincarnation
By JAK
The Forgetting Time is a well written novel about reincarnationthat doesn't quite work.I was enjoying it thoroughly until I reached about halfway when something began to bother me.I realized there was something wrong with the characters. They're disembedded .That is they seem disconnected from any larger framework. The novel centers around Janie and her son ,Noah who live in New York.I know they live in New York because the author periodically says so.However, the book has virtually no New York "feel" to it.I kept thinking they live in Downtown Manhattan even though I know it's supposed to be Brooklyn.( 20 years ago ,I would have been right. Now it has to be Park Slope).I guessed that Janie is Jewish but it's really just a guess. There is no mention of ethnicity or religion when it comes to Janie. At one point ,Janie says she really doesn't come from anywhere.Truer words are seldomly spoken! However, this didn't weigh me down too much until Guskin introduces Denise and her family.Denise is supposed to be Black and lives in what I think is a semi rural part of Ohio.We know this because the author says so .There is nothing in the characterization that would lead us to infer anything about Denise that would differentiate her from a suburbanite living in say New Jersey.I have this prejudice about novels that can be summarized as , show us , don't tell us.That's this novels weakness. Guskin seems to think ,if I say it , it will be so.That leads to a hollow feeling.Still , I enjoyed it.

Interesting idea.
By Cyndy
I don't feel like it was a bad book, but I don't feel like it's something I will remember either. I sort of felt like the plot was lacking, like it could have used a lot more depth, if that makes sense. The writing was mediocre at best and it wasn't something that I just had to finish in one day. It actually took me a few days to finish.

The story idea itself was interesting, it's not something you see much of, so I did like that about the book. It was "fresh" -- if you will. I just wish she would have spent more time developing the characters and making them more likable . I felt no connection or emotion toward any of them throughout the entire book, but the actual real life reincarnation stories she threw in from time to time before a new chapter started were interesting.

Reincarnation
By Texas Limey
While I have long believed in reincarnation, and the parts of the book describing the anguish of the main character's child were heartrending, a lot of the other detail was tedious.

Daniel (ESV Edition): The Triumph of God's Kingdom (Preaching the Word), by Rodney D. Stortz

The book of Daniel demonstrates the glorious wisdom and unmatched power of God at work in his people. It shows that in spite of difficulties, confusion, and persecution, God is in control and will deliver his people as he has promised. Through dreams and visions given to Daniel—not fully understood in their own day—God reveals that his sovereign rule will continue until the end, when all of his purposes will be fulfilled. Only through the light of the New Testament can we understand these mysteries given to Daniel, some of which aren’t made clear until the final pages of Scripture.

With faithful exposition, pastor Rodney Stortz walks readers through this prophetic book verse by verse, explaining Daniel’s historical context and offering practical applications. He focuses on the promises given to the faithful, the sovereignty of God, and the coming Messiah and Antichrist—shedding light on Daniel’s prophecies by looking at the New Testament teaching on the final kingdom that will never pass away.

A recurrent theme is the personal development of the coach throughout the coaching process and Peter Bluckert highlights the contribution that the Gestalt perspective offers the coach, through the use of self as instrument of change. Anecdotes, stories and case samples are used throughout the book to illustrate situations so that the reader builds a picture of what psychologically-informed coaching looks like and how to practice ethically, responsibly and competently.

Psychological Dimensions to Executive Coaching provides business and executive coaches, management consultants, human resource specialists, corporate executives/senior managers, health/social workers, occupational psychologists, teachers, psychotherapists and counsellors with the essential information they need to be successful coaches and empower their clients.

The Original "Sweet Peter Deeder" is back! - The book that came before "Sweet Peter Deeder aka Mr. Sweets".
By Zola
I didn't believe I'd ever see this book again since it's out-of-print and currently is only an e-book. It was originally published in 1979 & re-published in 1987, during the times when people understood there was "sin" on the streets and in homes, and did not try to sweep it all under the rug. After reading 3 volumes of a book by an English writer, I wanted to read something with "spice" from the "hood". It's a bit raw in places for someone who grew up in a middle class family. But Sweet Peter comes across so real. His goal to become a pimp is understandable. The book makes you realize how easy it is to mold a child living in bad circumstances, into an adult who will do anything to never be poor again. It makes you understand how important it is to bond to your children early if you want them to become a valuable member of society...or they will easily go down paths to their ultimate ruin.

Case Studies in Japanese Negotiating Behavior (Cross-Cultural Negotiation Books), by Michael Blaker, Paul Giarra, Ezra F. Vogel

Japanese representatives bring to the negotiating table a distinctive mind-set and behavioral style, one that’s largely free of gamesmanship and histrionics but that’s nonetheless frequently exasperating.

This volume explores four recent U.S.–Japanese negotiations―two over trade, two over security-related issues―looking for patterns in Japan’s approach and behavior. In the first three cases, veteran Japanologist Michael Blaker finds the same fundamental style―coping. “Coping captures the go-with-the-flow essence of the Japanese bargaining approach”: cautious, methodical, low key, resistant, apprehensive, and above all defensive. In the fourth case, Ezra Vogel and Paul Giarra recount how the United States and Japan fashioned a new security framework for their relationship in the 1990s. Vogel and Giarra show that close personal relationships, mutual trust, and a common purpose can foster flexible, fast, and fruitful negotiations.

Each case study explains the cultural as well as political, institutional, and personal factors and assesses their influence. A concluding chapter draws out common threads from the four studies, suggests how U.S. negotiators can maximize negotiating efficacy, and points the way toward a new and clearer understanding of Japanese bargaining behavior.

Themes in Japanses Negotiating Behavior
By Mer1331
Case Studies in Japanese Negotiating Behavior provided historical examples between Japan and the United States, highlighting consistent behaviors across each situation. The first two cases focuses on trade issues, including the Negotiation of Orange Imports and Negotiations on Rice Imports. The third and fourth cases focused on security issues, which featured the FSX Aircraft Negotiations and the Renegotiation of the Security Relationship. Within these cases, the Japanese style and approach to negotiation was rooted in the significant influence of the culture. The Japanese process was very methodical, including consensus building, reactive and defensive style, and managing perceptions during the negotiation.

I enjoyed this book because of the approach of including four diverse cases, and the authors drawing connections between each of the examples for a deeper understanding of the behavior of the Japanese. I was struck by how transparent the cultural norms of Japan were in the communication and negotiation approach, which reaffirmed the need for understanding of other countries by preparing in advance to understand the opposing side.

While the introduction of the book did clarify that the Japanese Negotiating Behavior studied only encompassed cases with the United States, I was disappointed that there weren't other examples included. There were many international scenarios between the two countries and both demonstrate distinct and opposite styles, so this analysis benefitted from being focused and clear--but left the reader wondering how the Japanese behaviors played out in other negotiations without such a strong relationship and significant difference in positions of power.

Mike Blaker - A God among Japanese-American Business Deals
By J. Schreiber
I just picked this book up yesterday and haven't been able to put it down. The 170 pages fly by like nothing and make you eager to read more. The depth and style Dr. Blaker uses to express his views is simply awe-inspiring. I've dealt with big businesses in Japan for many years now, and everything I read in the book is true and then some. It has made me rethink my whole strategy in ways I previously never thought possible. I HIGHLY recommend this fascinating insight into Japanese negotions, I simply can not stress this enough.

Good basis for Japanese negotiating style
By JA
The book focuses on four government level negotiations between the U.S. and Japan. Through these cases the reader can get a feel for how the Japanese negotiate, even though the scope is very limited. The authors show that Japan does have a distinctive style of negotiation and that it is different than other countries. To get a more detailed look at the Japanese negotiation style, readers should do further research, which can pick up nuances that would vary from government level negotiations and ideally identify commercial or personal negotiation styles of the Japanese.

Good Addition to the Library of the Young Reader
By John P. Rooney
"Eight Ate" by Marvin Terban. Illustrated by Giulio Maestro. Sub-titled, "A Feast of Homonym Riddles". Clarion Books, 1982.
This book plays on the wealth of homonyms (words which sound alike but mean different things) in the English language. First, a question, (i.e. a riddle) is asked, and then the answer, dependent upon a homonym, is given. For example, on the back cover, the riddle is: "What do you call a smelly chicken?"
Answer, playing on the homonyms: "A foul fowl!"
The entire book is filled with this type of word play: the riddle, with the answer in homonyms nicely illustrated by Giulio Maestro. All of the clever use of words makes for funny reading aloud. The illustrations keep the attention of the children who are too young read, even though they may not fully understand the joke embedded in the homonyms. This book is a worthwhile addition to the library of the young reader.

Homonym Helper
By A Customer
Eight Ate, created by Marvin Terban, was created as a teaching game, in one of his English classes. This book is useful for learning the difference between words that sound the same, but are spelled differently. The jokes and riddles are described by pictures to give clues to the answers. This book is a great way for kids to understand the different meanings behind words that sound the same. As someone who confuses they're and there, I found this book fun and helpful, and I'm in college! This would also help teachers in the Language Arts field. By creating fun use for words, Terban brings forth knowledge needed to understand the English Language.

Laugh out loud funny for the whole family!!!
By Lana E. Florida
Normally I don't write reviews. After searching for a book for my son, I stumbled upon this one. He pulls this out every few days and takes a read as if it is new information. I just love the way this book makes him want to learn and know more about words. He has thus graduated to similes and metaphors and he is just 6!!! This book is in black and white, which for us adds to the mystery of determining what the pictures are saying. The ease of simple sentences is another plus. We carry this with us to extended family and enjoy the riddle-like questions. This turned into a full fledged game against groups of family members at once! I'm glad to say I wasn't the only one dusting the cobwebs off my brain while racing against younger opponents. What a surprise! Most delightful and impressive!! Would like to see more with the same structure. Also, a note that having the answers at the bottom of each page sure makes a little fellow feel very in charge of his knowledge. Well done!!! So grateful for such a quality book. I am about to order other texts by the author. Don't change a thing!
