A textbook case of highway robbery

You're probably buying this book because you HAVE to, not because you want to. As textbooks go, this is an excellent one and, were it not for the high resale value, a "keeper".

It's easy to read, yet chock-full of information. Particularly interesting and useful is the history behind the electronic media we all take for granted, such as cable TV and satellite radio.

Parts of this book are dated, however. For example, these excerpts about the Internet: "Jupiter Research predicts that wireless broadband households will outnumber wired (dial-up) households by the year 2004 ..." and "Netscape Navigator and Microsoft's Internet Explorer, the two most popular and widely used [browsers], fiercely compete for audience share." Uh, Firefox anybody?

And that brings me to the title of this review. For an increasingly out-of-date ***paperback*** textbook, the price is freakin' outrageous. When I purchased mine in January of 2009, the college bookstore was selling new ones for $124 and used/abused ones for about $20 less, making it one of the most pricey textbooks in the store. For a 101-level survey class!?

Hint hint: Buy used through Amazon or other online bookseller, which is what I did, and I saved over $100.

It's a textbook

I have only read the first 2 chapters so far and they were very good, however, you can't review as you would a book for pleasure as this is a college required text. Like it or not, you have to read this if it's assigned. To date I have found five punctuation and typographical errors. That is distracting. There is probably not enough money in textbooks to justify hiring a proofreader.

About the Author
Yves Winkin is University Professor of Communication at the Ecole normale supérieure of Lyon (ENSL), France, and Extraordinary Professor of Anthropology at the University of Liège, Belgium. His major books include Anthropologie de la communication (1996, translated into Spanish and Portuguese); Erving Goffman: les moments et leurs hommes (1988, translated into Spanish, Portuguese and Japanese); and La Nouvelle Communication (1981, translated into Greek, Spanish and Portuguese). His latest book is Vers une marche plaisir en ville: boîte à outils pour augmenter le bonheur de marcher (2012, with Sonia Lavadinho). His MA is from the Annenberg School of Communication at the University of Pennsylvania; his PhD is from the University of Liège.
Wendy Leeds-Hurwitz is Director of the Center for Intercultural Dialogue and Professor Emerita at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. Among her books are: Learning Matters: The Transformation of US Higher Education (2012, with Peter Hoff), The Social History of Language and Social Interaction Research (2010), Socially Constructing Communication (2009, with Gloria Galanes), Wedding as Text (2002), Social Approaches to Communication (1995), Semiotics and Communication (1993), and Communication in Everyday Life (1989). Leeds-Hurwitz earned her MA and PhD degrees from the University of Pennsylvania.

Goffman's continued relevance for microanalysis of interaction

I am far from being the target audience of Yves Winkin and Wendy Leeds-Hurwitz’s introduction to the relevance of the work/ideas of Erving Goffman (1922-82) for those in communication. Though not recently, I have read almost all of what Goffman published and observed him skulking about and otherwise participating at some annual meetings of the American Sociological Association—participating as an eviscerating discussant of a sociolinguistic session. The rest of the time that I saw him, he was playing observer unaware or feigning unawareness that far from being invisible, he was being watched, too. “Faulty interactant” is a term Winkin and Leeds-Hurwitz use, albeit not in reference to Goffman’s own conduct. In his case, I would add the adverb “belligerently” to it. From what I have heard from various people (including the authors herein) who were graduate students at the University of Pennsylvania where Goffman was a “Benjamin Franklin Professor” from 1969 until his death, professing as little as possible, indifferent if not hostile to teaching, he was also a faulty professor.

Albeit in French, Winkin had written very insightfully about Goffman’s early trajectory. It is great to have this available in English, with some reaching further into Goffman’s life. It was quite clear that Goffman’s life influenced his outsider perspective on Anglophone cultures, including the Shetland Island site of his doctoral fieldwork, the massive St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland before mental patients were dumped into the streets, Nevada casinos, magazine advertisements, etc.

Teasing out some Goffman remarks about methods, the authors show him an advocate for long-term (one year) immersive fieldwork, though it seems to me that Goffman rarely, if ever, practiced immersive fieldwork, especially not in any alien (at least alien in language) culture. While candid about the unsystematic character of Goffman’s observations and writing, they also present some of his labels and primitive typologies in ways that will be heuristic for those doing microanalysis of interaction.

Though occasionally claiming that the “interaction order’ is created in interaction, generally, Goffman was aware that the rules (tacit ones as well as those laid down in etiquette books that he also examined) of how to do interaction in a particular culture predate any instance of interaction, so that “interaction order” is not different in abstractness from “social structure.” As they quote him (an example of the clotted Goffman prose): “A person’s performance of face-work, extended by his tacit agreement to help others perform theirs, represents his willingness to abide by the ground rules of social interaction. Here is the hallmark of his socialization as an interactant. If he and the others were not socialized in this way, interaction in most societies and most situations would be a much more hazardous thing for feelings and face.”

Moreover, in conflict with the “conversation analysis” pioneered by some restive Goffman students, Goffman insisted on the vital importance of context and on what is not captured on audiotape recordings and transcriptions. Unlike them, Goffman did not believe the structuralist assumption that “text reveals structure,” though specifying what else is involved and what is the “context” are often puzzling enough that I can sympathize with attempts to ignore them. Neither Goffman nor Winkin and Leeds-Hurwitz provide recipes for identifying what is relevant “context” or how to identify the (oft-neglected) “situation.”

As someone who is not a novice to thinking about what Goffman wrought, I think that Winkin and Leeds-Hurwitz choose good ideas that others may also find heuristic. In regard to Stigma, however, I am puzzled that they focus almost exclusively on the “discredited,” though for me the most important part of Goffman’s analysis in that 1963 concerns those who are “discreditable” rather than “discredited.” Personally, I am more interested in “role engulfment” (self-role merger) than in “role distance,” though Goff man the person and the analyst were expert in maintaining distance from roles.

In contrast with the insightful chapters about Goffman’s biography, main ideas, and methods, I find the chapter about which communication professionals have drawn on ideas (or at least terms) from Goffman boring, and the chapter on supposedly observing an interaction order (a conference) “through Goffman’s eyes” underwhelming and not all that warranted by Goffman’s practices or prescriptions.

There is much in the book of value to those interested in microanalysis who, like Goffman himself, are not in the guild of communication professors and students, skipping the first half (or the whole) of the third chapter.

Good starting point for learning PowerShell

In order to improve efficiency of work flow, I wanted to learn Windows PowerShell so that I can automate many of our daily tasks. I have years of .Net and C# experience but very little operating system scripting experience so this seemed a good place to start.

Just as the title says this book is for someone who is just starting out with operating system scripting. It will be beneficial to have a working understanding of the operating system including file structure, logs, and Windows registry but not essential to have much programming background. However, the book does a good job at explaining the basic concepts for everyone.

The format is a high level overview of a PowerShell tool followed by writing a script to shows how that tool can be used. There are a few places in the book where they could use some better editing. For example, in chapter 10 the author refers to both the ErrorRecord object and the Error-Record object. ErrorRecord is correct but this could be confusing when trying to get syntax correct. These problems are fairly minor but can be confusing.

Overall the book is exactly as advertised. Something to give you a high level overview of a new tool and enough basic knowledge to jump into more advanced training without being overwhelmed.

Great book for beginners

It is a really good book so far for beginners like me, who had very little exposure to Powershell programming. I only find one mistake so far, it is on page 24, one of the commands for enabling Remoting is not correct. You will get an error message. I Google it and the answer was right there at the top result. The book is so new that there is no errata on the web site yet.

I am half way through the book so far and the way it is taught is by using game examples. Which keeps it interesting.

I think this is a great book. I loved it

I think this is a great book. I loved it. It would be good for a beginner. It took me about 2 to 3 hours to go through each chapter. There was tedious typing for the examples so I skipped typing them in. I just read them carefully and made sure I understood them. Apparently you can download the examples.
I had just finished a PowerShell class with another beginners book ( Learn Windows PowerShell in a Month of Lunches by Don Jones and Jeffery D. Hicks, published by Manning ) and this book filled in a few missing pieces.

Practical reference for practicing engineers

As a professional engineer, I find myself in many situations where I need to refer back to several principals and theories of physics before applying them to real-life practical situations. Before buying this text book, I used to rely on multiple sources, often not finding what I need. After buying this text book, I no longer face this problem. In a nutshell, the biggest value for me for this book is that it encompasses many topics, all of which are very easy to find, and it also includes practical examples that I can easily relate to. I recommend this book to people who need easy and direct access to a wide spectrum of physics theories to apply practically in their professional life.

1) Great range of topics, all of which are very well presented: The book covers a lot of topics and presents the material in a very simple. The ability of the authors to present gradually complicated material in an always simple and interesting way is one of the biggest differentiators of this book compared to other Physics text books out in the market. The wide range of topics covered range from introductory to advanced, making it a great value for the price. You can see for yourself what I mean by downloading a copy of the table of contents from the Springer website.

2) A lot of supporting material: It's obvious that a lot of effort went into this text book, and the quality shows. The book is packed with detailed examples that really help you understand the topics, and every chapter comes with a large number of exercises, with answers at the end of the textbook.

3) A lot of colorful diagrams and illustrations. A good portion of the figures/diagrams/illustrations are colored. The colors are very vivid and make you enjoy the book as you read it. My only concern was that I wish ALL diagrams/illustrations were colored. I'm glad that all of the pictures that have multiple components are colored. If those were black and white, it would have been confusing.

This is not a book for scientists

I’m working on my experimental research of hi-voltage energy conversion cycles so I purchased this book to refresh my knowledge of principles of physics as books name suggested: "Principles of Physics for Scientists and Engineer" and because of positive reviews. After examining this books I find out that actual "Principles of Physics" are completely missed in this book in every chapter of this book. For example, in chapter "Sound and Light Waves" - there is missed theory of the nature of origin of sound/wave physics phenomena supported by historical experimental data. In books chapter "Electricity" - there are missed principles of physics matter of electric current and theory of electron based on historical experimental data. The book is loaded with mathematical analysis (they are very good) in every chapter but the principles of physics are completely missed. Wondering how this may have happened I did research on the books author Professor Hafez A. Radi and find out that his academic career is based on academicals standards of Egypt and Kuwait, - that gave me idea why principles of physics where missed in this book. I'm returning this book since it's totally useless for scientists and also very expensive.

About the Author

Marcus Weldon, is the president of Bell Labs and chief technology officer of Alcatel-Lucent. Marcus holds a BS in chemistry and computer science from King’s College, London, and a PhD in physical chemistry from Harvard University. In 1995 he joined the Physics Division at AT&T Bell Labs as a post-doctoral researcher, before becoming a Member of Technical Staff in the Optical Materials Division. Dr. Weldon won a series of scientific and engineering society awards for his work on electronic and optical materials, and holds numerous patents related to that work.

In 2005 he moved from research to hold a variety of CTO roles in different business divisions, before becoming the Corporate CTO with responsibility for defining the future direction of the industry and the associated evolution of the Alcatel-Lucent portfolio. He became the thirteenth President of Bell Labs in December 2013. He is a member of the Executive Board of ATIS (Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions) and a member of the FCC Open Internet Advisory Committee.

Definitely worth reading for techno-curious people - a General Read.

This book is written in just enough technical lingo that anyone who reads techno-blogs can easily understand. It has amazing and original insights from Bell Labs researchers based on their experience and mathematical models of future that even Mary Meeker would find interesting. Although it appears it was written by one author, actually it has been written by an entire organization - Bell Labs. Each chapter is written by 2-3 researchers from Bell Labs sharing their expertise and deeper insights into their research areas and other organizations - Bell Labs Consulting and CTO have also been credited with contributing.
Where is technology enabled by networking & cloud going in 2020? How is technology and connectivity going to change the way clouds evolve? Why data centers will move from remote locations to within a few kilometers from your home. This means data centers will shrink in size and multiply in numbers. How much data will each person on the earth store per capita om 2020 ..even 2025. Is it even possible to secure our data and networks? How monumental is it going to be?
This book also postulates that Internet-of-Things (IoT) - ie. your microwave, stove, fridge all gets connected and the data streams coming from these devices are going to be analyzed continuously by intelligent programs in the cloud to make life easier. Accessible, pleasant, and enlightening

Not very often do you see a research organization like the Bell Labs speak with one voice. Usually you access their latest findings scattered in different publications, focused on a detailed field of science or technology, in articles filled with (sometimes) painstaking details and technical demonstrations.

One book! One single book describing where Bell Labs think our communication technology is today, and where it is heading tomorrow! This is both exciting and daunting. Is this going to be a rewarding reading experience, or will it end up on the shelves, right next to these big encyclopedia volumes?

Chances are, if you are reading this review, you are asking yourself the same question.

Well, it is surprisingly accessible! The book is well written, in clear and concise language, and filled with supporting data and diagrams, making it a pleasant and enlightening experience. When I closed the book, I could not help but think how much more I knew about the telecommunications landscape, though not really a newcomer in this field, than I did before turning the first page. Oh and when I say landscape, it’s really a “panoramic landscape” just as some other reviewers already observed.

In this day and age, there’s not much more you can ask from a technology book.

Kudos to the Bell Labs team for making this, and making it for everyone.

One of the two or three most useful astrology books I own

I use this book constantly when I'm interpreting horoscopes. Its main feature is a delineation of all major aspects (the geometric relationships between planets). Hamaker-Zondag's interpretations are clear, psychologically observant and non-dogmatic; there's a refreshing open-endedness here. The delineations are preceded by a helpful general discussion of aspects, with an emphasis on their elemental basis. A chapter on unaspected planets is also handy. If you want to start interpreting astrological charts, or get a deeper understanding of your own chart, this is definitely a book you can use.

A Cookbook for building Understanding

Overall, this is an excellent reference for planetary aspects and a learning guide as well for the student. Part I (nearly 1/3 of the book) has much to offer in understanding special problems such as unaspected planets and judging the importance of aspects. Additionally, much care is taken in the emphasis on understanding the basic nature of the planets.
The book did present me with a problem or two - the most obvious being the inclusion of the Inconjunct among major aspects while hiding explanation of the aspect under the heading of the Semisextile. Has the author not yet made up her mind as to its importance?

I'm a huge fan of the "Lord of the Rings" ...

I'm a huge fan of the "Lord of the Rings" series and have been in search for books that actually could keep my attention as well as them. "Surviving Eden" is just that. At the end of this first book, I was left wanting more. I actually cried out, "No," when it ended. I could not get enough of it.

Scott Marcy whisks you away beside Alex Dubois to a mysterious world filled with creatures that could help you, hunt you, or kill you. Stay alive, stay alive, stay alive! That's all I could think while I read this. I didn't want to leave Alex when the book ended. I've grown quite attached and can't wait to see what lies in store for him next.
