Interesting Read

Nuclear airborne sex while saving the world? Yes, please!

Alec Farley defines himself by his abilities. He has been trained to control his skills in such away as to become a powerful weapon for unbeknownst to him a very corrupt father figure. He's also been led to believe many things about life that are outdated and is inexperienced in many common and social aspects of the world. After being recommended to see a psychologist, Alec is initially wary, but soon warms up to the woman trying to treat him when it becomes clear the only threat she poses is in her physical beauty. Having thought he was in control during their sessions, he underestimates her, so Alec tries seduction as his weapon of choice. In doing so, strange things begin to happen and a mission goes awry. His powers become impossibly stronger and harder to manage, but there is something about Beth that sets him off in an entirely new and extremely pleasant way.

For Beth Nakamora, helping Alec realize he has choices in life like everyone else helps him see that the Resource and, most especially his father, is using him. Her own traumatic past, won't allow her to abandon him. The problem is mutual trust and when patient/psychologist lines become blurred and eventually crossed, Beth makes a fateful decision to use force by kidnapping him. She shows Alec a different side to a world he hadn't known existed or experienced outside of books and the Resource. When it becomes apparent to both of them that his father has kept him in the dark for much of his life, Alec decides to take matters into his own hands - literally.

The story has sort of a supernatural X-Men feel to it and by the end, you'll definitely see why. Unfortunately, while the premise was good, some of the execution felt a bit lacking. There were some awkward scene changes or dialogue that didn't seem to flow naturally. Getting into the story and forming connections with the characters took some work as the story and their relationship development is fairly fast-paced.

Alec is and is not a na�ve hero. He is extreme on both sides as displayed by never having been to a Wal-Mart and takes a new interest to Motown music and learns to drive. Throughout the story, he shows an adorable innocence and enthusiasm for learning what would be considered social norms. However, the opposite extreme in his na�vet� is displayed with his visits to strip clubs and his training to take on missions deemed too dangerous for regular civilian soldiers. Somewhat of the same can be said about Beth. While she may be extremely intelligent and retains a do-gooder fearless streak, she plays the victim card a bit too much for my taste. However, her determination is a valued redeeming quality.

Regardless to some of the pitfalls of the story, I was very attracted to the continued stream of action sequences that never let the story flatline. That action includes some really out of this world sex scenes that were enjoyably imagined. The graphic description may not have all been there, but Ms. Lawson definitely provides some unique sense exploratory ones. Some of the secondary characters as well were a welcome addition and occasional distraction.

I believe the series deserves further exploration and will be keeping an eye out for when the next is released. Readers looking for an adventure into a paranormally complex and political world with a quite literally hot hero, will want to check this out.

Action, suspense, and romance...a real page-turner

An inventive thriller with a good balance of action, suspense, and romance. Alec Farley is a young man with special abilities -- he can move things with his mind, or create fires with a wave of his hand. He's been raised from childhood by a shadowy paramilitary organization to become the perfect soldier. Therapist Beth Nakamora is brought in, ostensibly to help Alec with his anger management issues. But she has her own agenda: to help Alec escape, whether he wants to or not. Soon the two of them are on the run, and they have to learn to trust each other as they try to evade Alec's handlers, as well as cope with a terrorist plot against New York City. The relationship between Alec and Beth is nuanced and complicated. The reader has little doubt that they're meant to be together, but the complications (internal and external) that get in the way are plausible and they both remain sympathetic, even when they're at odds. Alec's powers lead to some pretty spectacular action scenes (and "action" scenes, if you know what I mean...). This book is a real page-turner, and I enjoyed it a lot.

A great balance between action and adventure

A handsome hero. A beautiful (and courageous) woman. A great villain. A mysterious mentor. Throw in some intrigue, explosions and a car chase and you have a great book!
Corrina Lawson, intrepid Geek Mom and blogger, uses her story-telling skills to craft a well-balanced and fun read. (Okay, she doesn't have a car chase, but there IS a car scene.)
Go ahead and get this book; you'll like it.

Unique and fascinating

This is an excellently researched and written book that is difficult to categorize. It is a superb lesson in economics woven into the "magical thinking" about the after-life. It is surprising that a book covering such a serious scholarly subject can be so accessible. The book manages to draw you into a subject you have probably seldom thought about and you will be enriched for the journey. A memorable read.

No matter what diet you follow, this cookbook has something for you.

I think this is a great place to start if you want to test the waters a bit and see what eating nutritarian is all about. The first 30 pages have everything you need to get started. It won't require the all out chaos in the family meal plan - occurring when the family is forced to eat what you are eating; rather, you can fix any one of these fantastic recipes as a side dish and skip the main course. They will like it too.

If you aren't familiar with what Dr. Fuhrman teaches, there is a enough instruction in the book to get a good overview. I didn't begin to eat greens regularly until 3 years ago when I started following the Eat to Live plan. Now, they are a normal part of my diet and I don't think twice about it - I wish I had THIS cookbook in 2009!

There are a couple of points that should be emphasized. First, he clearly explains that it's better to add vegetables and fruits to your diet than to be overly focused about organic/GMO/etc... Not that these are unimportant, but if cost or availability is a concern, eating regular versions of these vegetables is far better than skipping. He points out that most science studies cited for health benefits used conventional varieties of vegetables and fruits. There is an excellent guide on which produce is most likely to have pesticides and it can help you focus limited budgets where it will be most healthful. All the recipes for diabetes and metabolic disorder are clearly marked.

Next, he and the 6 guest chefs created guides on how to select the best vegetables, etc... These are throughout the book, so if you don't know what to look for our how to make the perfect selection, there's help doing it along with many other tips and tricks. These are sprinkled within the recipes and most are set apart from the text in green highlight or boxes. As well, if you don't know how to saut� with water or prepare an artichoke, it's here in easy to follow directions. He even has a guide to spices!

One helpful hint if you're not accustomed to eating fresh vegetables daily - start slow when shopping. Until you get the flow of fresh greens and vegetables, buying too much at one time will result in too much ending in the compost pile or disposal. Once you get the hang of it, you'll have a good feel for when and what to buy and you are in and out of the grocery store with just a few things. If you spread that out with some of the recipes made of staples, or soups and stews which can be stored/frozen, you're never far from a great tasting healthful meal.

There are suggestions on additions if you aren't eating a vegan diet, which may not be as healthful, but will be welcomed for mixed-diet households. Dr Fuhrman encourages people to eliminate the calorie dense animal food, but he doesn't beat people up with it. I choose the plant-versions, because that's what I prefer.

Finally, his AMAZING approach to making dressings deserves noting. This is the single item that allowed me to fully convert to eating this way. They are delicious and EASY to make. Once you make one or two examples, you can literally make unlimited sauces and dressings with his easy to understand 4-ingredient approach. I know others have "complained" a bit by him promoting his ingredients, but he always offers alternatives in the recipes that can be found at your local grocery store. Many of his items are available here on amazon if you'd rather buy than make. That being said, anyone can make dressings fresh in just a few minutes and if you keep just a few key ingredients in the house, you're always ready to go! Remember, they aren't just for salads.

I'm grateful to him on many levels - health and weight, but equally important is he is a fantastic man with an unrelenting drive and passion to help people get better using nothing but food. It works if you follow it.

In the past, getting started has been the biggest obstacle for most people and this cookbook is definitely a big help.

Mixed Feelings

The Eat To Live Cookbook is based upon other books by Dr. Furhrman and focuses on his work with individuals who want to be healthier (weight loss or disease control). It is a companion to his other book Eat To Live.

In the preface, he lays out the foundation for the recipes: foods to eat every day, foods to avoid, quantities to take and how to prepare or cook those foods. A lot of the emphasis is on green leafy vegetables and beans - and so the recipes do contain a lot of those ingredients. His suggestion is to avoid foods like breads, animal-derived products such as meats and dairy, and of course sugary foods and soda. Most of the recipes have a base of what he calls G-Bombs - Greens, Beans, Onions, Mushrooms, Berries, Seeds. He also rates foods based upon their nutritional value per calorie. Finally, he gives recommendations on food shopping, preparation, herbs, organic product, etc.

The recipes are of a great variety and interest but quite a few have already been published by Fuhrman. Worrisome for me is that I don't live in a major metropolitan center where a lot of exotic or less common fruits/vegetables/greens are available. I've been unable to find several ingredients: some ingredients are only available here in season. Fortunately there aren't too many exotic ingredients - the recipes stick to the staples outlined in Furhman's good food index.

One big issue for me, and definitely a minus, is that several of the recipes call for premade items sold on Furhman's website. I don't understand why a recipe would include a premade ingredient that could only be bought from the author - especially one as important as the flavoring. His book states that the recipes for those premade seasonings are available online but I haven't found them so they aren't really freely available as stated in the book (I believe you can get them if you pay him more money for a subscription). And those products are extremely expensive - which makes this whole book feel like a ponzi scheme disguised as recipes to get you to his website and buy his products. I would have trusted the book a lot more if the recipe for those 'zests' (which add the important flavoring) and such were in the book as well. If we paid for a book of recipes, why not truly give us all the ingredients needed without having to go to his website and buy more pre-made products to get the taste as intended? I know I can randomly substitute - but how would I know what works best without knowing how the recipe was intended to taste in the first place? If I just made my own recipes, I'd not need the book?

In any event, it all read well and I know Eat To Live has been a great solution for so many. but I think I'll be avoiding his website, which feels just a little too slick with all its upsell pushing. I shouldn't have to buy additional products, available only in one place (especially if only the author's website), just to complete a recipe. Reviewed from an ARC.

Disappointing

I am a huge fan of Dr. Furman's earlier books- I cannot say enough good things about them. Maybe it was because my expectations were high, but I am quite disappointed with this cookbook. This is primarily due to the fact that just about every recipe uses Dr. Fuhrman's special ingredients, purchased from his website. I have been cooking plant based meals for years, and they do not require any "secret ingredients." This is an advertisement for his products as much as it is a cookbook. Overall, not much I can say about this other than that it leaves me disappointed in Dr. Fuhrman and in this cookbook.

Faith restored in Dodd, who now writes more suspense than romance

I was really worried about Dodd after Obsession Falls, but Because I’m Watching restored my faith in her storytelling capabilities. I wonder now if I was simply jarred by her switch in genre, because I can see her talent and skill, but these kind of books just aren’t what I associated with Dodd in my head. I do now. I’m glad to see this book was classified more as suspense/thriller/mystery than romance, though some places still say romantic suspense. I can see where they’d get that, but the romance was not the main plot here, it was a subplot that shared time with Kateri’s POV. Dodd’s officially jumped on the suspense bandwagon, and she seems to be settling in quite nicely…though I’ll miss her steamy romances.

After some time in a mental institution, Maddie Hewitson moves to Virtue Falls, Washington, to try to live normally. But that’s hard to do when ghosts lurk in the shadows, when nightmares keep her awake. When she falls asleep at the wheel and crashes her car into the front of Jacob Denisov’s dungeon—er, I mean “home”—Maddie convinces the town she’s a menace. Convinces Jacob, too…until he starts to suspect how sane she actually is, and wonders who would go to such trouble to drive her crazy.

This book was very, very good. In fact, the biggest problem I had with it doesn’t have anything to do with the story—it’s the cover. It. Is. Terrible. Orange and teal isn’t my favorite color combination, so the title and author text turned me off first. Then I felt it, and I do not care for the texturization. I don’t know what it is the texture is supposed to represent, and for a while I thought it had been a mistake, that something strange had happened to my copy before it got to me. But I think it may weirdly represent condensation, what with the runny hand print and all. Then there’s the weird pattern over the whole cover; it’s small, but almost looks like very fine screen-door mesh or denim material. I don’t know what the point of that is, either. And finally…the woman. The woman with the black hair…and red eyebrows. For pete’s sake.

The plot was certainly interesting, and while it wasn’t completely predictable or cliche, I could still see what was coming by halfway through. Chantal was the most mysterious of the neighbors Jacob met, so she was on my radar from the get-go. Andrew also acted suspicious from the get-go, so I knew he was involved somehow. I was slower to catch on to the fact that Chantal was one of Maddie’s tormentors from the asylum, but by the third time Maddie thought/talked about it (what is it they say about mentioning something three times to make it stick with the audience?), I figured her tormentors were still harassing her for some reason. I wasn’t sure how the tormentor and Andrew had teamed up, but that was easily explained. Money and sex make the world go round!

I really cared about the characters. I didn’t think I would relate to them, because I’ve never experienced anything as unbelievably horrific as they had, but I actually did connect to them a little, now that I think about it. I could empathize with Maddie, who longed to find someone who would believe in her, believe that she wasn’t crazy. And I could empathize with Jacob, who was incredibly depressed, drowning in guilt and failure and shame and helplessness. I liked them a lot, and I was impressed by their character arcs. Their progress was steady and their personalities consistent. I was so proud of Maddie when she kept her head and faced down her demon, and I was so proud of Jacob when he decided he had something to live for.

However, because I’m me, I do have a couple of nitpicky things to complain about. One—how would Jacob or anyone know the exact height and weight of a stranger? It drives me nuts when authors get lazy and a character takes one look at someone and can give their exact height and weight. Sure, someone can be trained or just plain have a good eye, but I’m still highly doubtful. Two—I could tell Dodd felt the need to satisfy her romance fan base, because she tried really hard to get Jacob and Maddie to reach all the romance benchmarks (have amazing sex, say “I love you,” and at least propose marriage) by the end of the book, and she tried even harder to make it seem well-paced and natural. I didn’t buy it. I could understand that they connected to one another emotionally and became friends, but their “falling-in-love story” didn’t quite seem organic to me. I cut slack about their rather strange willingness to share their past nightmares with each other, I could maybe see how that would come about, but when they exchanged “I love you”s, my eyebrows shot up and I thought, Really? All you really know about each other is how effed up you are and why, but hardly any of the other mundane details. Honestly, though, I don’t really care, because I was just glad they had each other.

Oh, and Kateri. I like her and care about her, but something about her storyline still strikes me as off. I’m not sure how to explain it… Dodd managed to tie her into the story by the convenient fact that Kateri is sheriff, and we watch Kateri go through her life…but she never gets much of a conclusion, because she’d clearly being maintained as a kind-of main character whose story just hasn’t been told yet. And I don’t think I’m okay with that. If I’m going to pay for a book—a hardcover, no less—and get emotionally involved in the plot and characters, dang it, I want some resolution. I don’t want to be strung along to ensure future sales. Good business strategy, perhaps, but it pisses me off. And it’s not just Dodd—I have the same beef with Jodi Thomas. I love her books and eagerly anticipate each one, but in her current series she has a couple of charcters that she’s strung along since Book 1 and hasn’t had them reach their conclusion yet. Ladies, if you’re going to write a series about a small town and its residents, fine, but make each book complete, please.

Speaking of loose ends, there are a couple here, but I don’t have nearly as many questions as I did when I finished Obsession Falls. The ones here have to do with Kateri—see what I mean?—and will be part of the next book, as evidenced by the sample chapter at the end.

Overall, a wonderful, freaky thriller that I would highly recommend (while sweeping Obsession Falls under the rug…)

Christina Dodd's Best Work

I've been in love with Virtue Falls, a town filled with quirky residents created by Christina Dodd, since its debut. BECAUSE I'M WATCHING is Dodd's best book of the series (so far) and quite possibly my favorite book that Dodd has written.

Jacob Denisov and "Mad Maddie" Hewitson are both tortured souls, but they have chosen two different ways of coping. Maddie pushes forward and fights against the despair that could defeat her. Jacob prefers to hide in the dark, living out his life with visions of the horror he survived and guilt over those he couldn't save. When Jacob's and Maddie's worlds collide — literally — our story begins.

Dodd uses a deft hand to draw us into our character's lives. We slowly discover their demons and cheer for them to defeat them. In fact, her portrayal of Jacob and his journey is subtle yet impactful. As a reader, I was lured into thinking the early part of the book was slowly paced with lots of character study before we get into the action, but it worked perfectly and certainly kept me turning the page to see what Jacob would do next. (And the construction crew and their roles were priceless!)

If you've never read Christina Dodd before, make sure THIS is your first title. I guarantee you'll seek out her backlist. And if you've read Dodd before — why haven't you finished BECAUSE I'M WATCHING yet!

Return to the Dark Side of Virtue Falls

The newest book in the Virtue Falls series is about the two lead characters - Maddy Hewitson and Jacob Desinov - both are survivors. It is suspenseful and thought provoking as these two struggle to find "normal". Both suffer anxiety from brutal experiences in their pasts.

Someone is torturing Maddy - her neighbors refer to her as Crazy Maddy. Jacob has become a hermit in his own home trying to escape his feelings of guilt for surviving torture. They find in each other salvation and understanding.

Ms. Dodd has crafted another fantastic story of the human condition in Virtue Falls - and several moments of laugh out loud humor that her readers have come to respect. Well written and a fantastic read.
