Learning orchestration can be a daunting task.
For example: what is the range of the bassoon, how do strings decide which way their bows will move, what does transposition in F mean, and a whole host of other questions await the student of orchestration. Norman Ludwin has made this process much easier by writing his new book: "Orchestration, A New Approach". The book consists of a 50-page booklet and DVD. The DVD contains over 1000 pages of scores analyzed for the student of orchestration; not harmonic and form analyzes but rather examining issues of dovetailing, doubling, tessitura concerns, instrumental effects, composer's use of articulations and dynamics, bowing and phrasing issues, texture, and the relationship of the different orchestral sections to one another. The twenty scores range from Haydn to Stravinsky and using a color-coded system, the student can study these annotated scores and see precisely the important points. The author has created 15 lessons beginning with the fundamentals and moving through each orchestral family, culminating in lessons on combining the instruments together with various score studies. Each lesson consists of several educational files, including exercises and instrumental examples. The lessons include orchestral scores that pertain to the particular area of study. Dr. Norman Ludwin teaches Orchestration in the UCLA Extension Program and at the Professional Musicians Union in Los Angeles. "Norman has played in my orchestra since my earliest scores, and frequently orchestrates for me as well. In his book, hecovers the basics of orchestration from the invaluable point of view of one of Los Angeles' top session players. "Orchestration: A New Approach",with its clear analysis and numerous examples from the masters, is a fresh offering of orchestration technique that emphasizes craft and is enjoyable to read."-Michael Giacchino- Sales Rank: #1391909 in Books

Great Book for Learning Practical Orchestration Skills
By J. Swearingen
I've got just about every orchestration book imaginable - Adler, Piston, Kennan and about 20 others, most of which are out of print. It's difficult learning orchestration from a book. What makes this book very valuable are the fully color-coded and notated scores that Dr. Ludwin has put together, showing you specific orchestration techniques of well known works (along with the audio recording). It's one thing to hear a technical description of dovetailing, shadowing and highlighting, for example, but quite another to see multiple examples of how several composers used it.
You get detailed orchestration info on all the major sections; strings, woodwinds, brass, harp and percussion. The "book" is well laid out on a DVD for easy access to the mp3 files, notated scores and PDF notes. Highly recommended.

Comprehensive, but easy to understand
By Mike Perlowin
Any honest review must include any personal feelings, pro or con, the reviewer may feel toward the person who's work he/she is reviewing. Therefore in the spirit of full disclosure, I must say that Dr Ludwin is both a friend and mentor, and this book serves as the text for a class he taught in which I was a student.
Orchestration is a vast, and daunting subject. The infinite possibilities can be very intimidating to a musician who is just starting to learn out it. And the books most often used use in academic circles, are so big as to be downright scary.
This book is geared toward musicians who are already accomplished in other ways, and are looking to expand their knowledge into this area. It's pretty basic, but it covers a lot of territory. It explains what the various orchestral instruments can do, including their ranges. Because Dr. Ludwin is himself a string player, there is a great emphasis on strings. Less so on woodwinds and brass, although these are covered as well.
The book contains numerous examples of how different composer over the ages have used and combined the different instrument to produce orchestral colors. It gives the reader a lot of tips, including things to do to enhance one's writing, (with lots of examples from works by all the great composers,) as well as things to be avoided.
There is also a section on musical terminology, including many things that this reviewer did not previously know.
As previously stated, this reviewer is a former student of Dr. Ludwin, and this book served as the text. The class is over, but I will be studying and learning from this book for a long time. I recommend it to any musicians who wish to learn more about this never-ending and fascinating subject.

Thoughtful and well organised book
By bdr
As an inveterate student of every orchestration and arranging book under the sun I was pleased to discover another book that I hadn't come across. Dr Ludwin's method of labelling scores is clear and very helpful in following certain threads and techniques through a score. It is not a wordy or overly academic book but very practical and in many areas 'cuts to the chase'. There are many examples and resources included. I look forward to volume two!
